• Cyclists are proper road users and have every right to be there.

IME cyclists are proper road users only when they want to be. If they want to go through a red light or cut across the road they think it's acceptable to do so. If you are a road user you are a road user and need to follow the rules regardless of whether you are in a car or on a bike.

I'm in favour of wearing lights and a helmet.
I have a front light, a side light, a rear light and a light on my helmet.
I've seen some terrifying things when drivers passed me when presumably either a) they had not noticed me b) were too wasted to avoid me properly or c) insert reason for brain damage here.

I am confident that I am visible from the back but I am still scared by cars behind me. Too many tw@ts on the road. One of the reasons I am taking driving lessons.
My TV is broken!

Look up primary road position. Basically involves using a full cars width of the road like a motorbike, so pulling out assertively (but safely) if someone looks like they're going to overtake stupidly.
• Sorry to hear that Fay: running a car certainly won't save you money. The book Cyclecraft might offer some advice and encouragement if you haven't seen before. Hope that you still might be able to cycle sometime.

Sorry but I disagree with your claim completely.

Whilst there may well be a small percentage of cyclists jumping red lights, it is most certainly not the norm. I was a cyclist for 25 Years, not once did I jump traffic lights, cut up traffic or not follow the rules of the road. The only reason for this other than the law, was because I was a cyclist, compared to a car, I would have stood next to no chance of surviving an accident if I rode so dangerously.

As a driver, I know only too well about the dangers of driving, and I have had more risk of a driving accident, as a direct result of other drivers, than any cyclist.

I see a lot of drivers breaking the law, too busy yapping on their phones, doing their make up or just oblivious to other road users, should I say ALL drivers disregard the rules of the road, or the law, due to mobile phonecalls, speeding, reckless driving or driving NOT in accordance with the law. Or might you find that just a little too offensive?

There are a small percentage of crazy cyclists, just as there is of drivers. The majority of drivers AND cyclists, follow the rules of the road and drive or ride safely and in accordance to the law. Not just when they want to be, but everytime they are out on the road.

• I cycle daily through Hyde Park on the cycle paths. The other evening (5.30pm so not late but definately dark), the police were on the cycle path pulling over those without lights. There seemed to be quite a number too! I didn't get pulled over because I am lit up like a Christmas Tree :-)

Sounds a little 'risky' to pull out when you're about to be overtaken?

I haven't heard of side lights for a bike... Which side to you put the side light on? And what colour is it? Are they technically legal?

Photogenic
I used to have a little amber side light on one of my pedals, it came with the bike.
