Samsung Europa - O2 issues

I bought my hubby the Samsung Europa (wanted a inexpensive basic smart phone) for christmas. Got it from CPW as it needed to be unlocked so he could use his work SIM (O2).

This week, it has started duplicating text messages that are being sent to him. His boss sent him a text the other morning and he got the same text message 20 times over the course of day (including 3am in the morning!)

He said he read somewhere that this is a standing issue with this particular Samsung phone when used on the O2 network.

Has anyone heard of this before?

If it is true, given that it is not a fault with the phone but with O2, what are the chances that we'll be able to get a refund from CPW.

Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

It's a handset issue which hs been reported on other networks. You need to contact the place of purchase for support.

There are 4 o2 shops where I live. I went into 3 of them at weekend.

First one to look at phones generally - liked the europa - would have sold it me but I wanted to read reviews first
Second shop (downstairs in a shopping centre) - decided I liked the phone, went to have another play with a few features, none in sotck and price was £20 more than previous day in other o2 shop, he said they were aware of the problem, so it was kind of up to me, no fix known as yet
Third shop (upstairs in same shopping centre) - price same as shop 1, but they had an o2 guru in store, he wouldn't sell it to me as they weren't selling any more until the problem was fixed - didn't know when this would be, everyone they had sold had been returned. He did say there should be a fix mid/end of the month, worst case it could be recalled (he didn't think this was likely)

You can still buy the phone online at o2's store, but then if anything's wrong you have to return it online (too much hassle!)

So it's a known problem but not really sure what you can do about it except return in :( Some people have upgraded the android software to the latest version and this has worked (just google and you'll find it on forums)

If their is a genuine upgrade for a Samsung phone it will be available via your Samsung Kies software .

  • Thanks for everyones input. We have been back to CPW tonight (the one in the Metro Centre), and the manager of the store claimed to have not heard of this issue, and told us to go back to the store (in Newcastle city centre) I bought it from, to speak to the engineer to see if they could do anything. Also suggesting that it was probably an issue with the old sim card we we're using. It was obvious he didn't want to have the lost sale showing on his store accounts.

We then went to the 02 store and the guy there confirmed what Jenny above said, that they had stopped selling the phone.

So tomorrow we are going to take a trip to the store in Newcastle to see what their take is on the issue.

Ohhh, please report what happens - but to think I could have bought it from one store and not the other and you can still buy it at o2 online (their online agents claim all theirs are ok!).

Will be interesting to see what they say to you

shame as I wanted that phone, this is putting me off - HTC Wildfire maybe?!
  • It is a shame, for the price it is a cracking phone.

Phones4u are selling the Wildfire for £129 in the Metro Centre!

Brilliant, thanks for this - tesco was the cheapest at £159

Phones for you online shows more than tesco, maybe it's instore only - checking that out this weekend!

As stated about; Unfortunately it's a known issue with this phone, it's the phone itself, not the network operator, using an older 2G SIM isn't the cause, but I'd recommend getting a free of charge replacement 3G SIM if your husband is using an older SIM.
  • A brief update. We went to the CPW store in Newcastle this morning, and the guys there couldn't have been more helpful. They didn't have a problem with giving us a refund (and unlike the Metro Centre store they were aware of the problem), but my hubby really likes the phone, so we are going to try the CPW suggestion and update the firmware. He has had another couple of the same text message since yesterday, so we will wait and see if he gets anymore now that we have done the update.

If we do have to take it back, what is everyones view on the HTC Wildfire? As it's only currently £129 in phones4U it seems like to good an opportunity to miss?!

I've come across this issue twice at my job but I assumed it was a fault with the phones, I never made the connection between O2 and the Europa. I advised both customers to upgrade their firmware and haven't been back so I assume this fixes it. Hm. Thanks for the info, let me know if it works so I can advise my customers further.
