Why do you need to tell us, twice, that her name was Malwina?
    Because that was her name?
However annoying it must be to have only just got the bag, it cost 1.00!!!! You could've got another without fuss when they said no exchange without receipt.
I did buy another bag (I still needed to get my stuff home.)

I know it was only a pound and that it was a lot of fuss to make over so very little money. It just annoyed me that they refused to replace a defective item I'd bought only 10 minutes earlier just because I'd lost a receipt. (And the "it's only £1" argument cuts both ways.)

I understand now that although strictly speaking you don't need a receipt, you do need some proof of purchase. I wasn't aware of the second part of this at the time. This does mean that if you pay for something in cash and they don't give you a receipt (they're not obliged to) then you have effectively no legal recourse should it prove to be defective. And I wasn't aware of that previously. Obviously, this is no great hardship if it's the Pound Shop, but it's true for every (cash) purchase from every shop. Something I'll bear in mind in future....

    Moral of the story?

If you pay cash, always ask for and then keep the receipt safe. If they don't offer a receipt, ASK for one.

If they can't or won't give you a receipt (as unlikely and unrealistic as that is) pay with an alternative method or don't buy it from there....

So you're not going to apologise for being an @rse in the shop then?
The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

    Nah...

I thought about it, but they did rip me off, even if it was only for a pound.

We'll call it a wash, as the yanks say.
  • I thought about it, but they did rip me off, even if it was only for a pound.

How did they rip you off?
They gave you a bag and they gave you a receipt for your payment.

Yes, the bag was faulty but if you had returned it along with the receipt that they gave you, they would have exchanged it or given you your pound back.
The shop staff did everything that the law required them to do.

Agree with it or not, you were the one at fault for not keeping the receipt and then accusing the store staff of acting illegally.
I bet if the store manager said that you were breaking the law and asked you to leave the shop you wouldn't be too happy about it.

It's quite possible to rip people off and not break the law. They sold me faulty goods and didn't replace them. Yes, they were within their rights as I'd not got the receipt. But that doesn't mean they didn't rip me off. It just means they did it legally.
  • Ripped you off ?? i said how you can solve it take the 1st bag back with the 2nd bag reciept thats of course if you didn't learn your lesson the 1st time and threw the 2nd reciept away lol

you know i am in a store manager in a big company and you know what i can guess what was said after you left shop..and from experiance not only would the staff spoke about you outburst but a lot of customers in store at the time would have said something along the lines of ahh what a idiot their is always one person who thinks hes better blah blah..its only a quid for crying out loud what you expect gold plated ??

I didn't think you were serious about that. I don't think they'd accept it, somehow. As you're a store manager, would you?

Not that it matters, it wasn't about the money but the fact that they refused to exchange faulty goods they'd sold me only 10 minutes earlier. Even if they only cost a pound. I could sort of see their logic if I'd asked for a refund - it might have been some convoluted scam to buy stuff from the 99p shop, walk halfway across town and get a refund from Poundworld, thereby making 1p profit. More realistically, I might have shoplifted it and be trying to convert it into money. But I was asking for an exchange and I honestly can't see what sort of scam she thought I might be running. So I'm forced to assume she didn't think I was running a scam, she figured I'd probably bought it there, but was sticking to the rules.

So Poundworld should be allowed to sell goods that are faulty because they're "only a quid"? I hadn't expected "gold plated" goods, I'd expected a cheap shoddy rucksack, which is what I got. But I don't think it's unreasonable to expect it to work at least once before breaking. Even if it's "only a quid."
  • Most shops give you a carrier bag, sometimes for a few pence. Why did you need a rucksack to get your shopping home?

Doesn't that come under personal choice? Something the OP is quite within his rights to exercise.
