A few days ago, I went to ASDA and bought the following: (individual item prices in brackets)
10x Quality Street chocolate boxes (£3.00)
1x Cadburys Twirl 4pk (£1.00)
2x Cadburys Buttons Treat size (£2.00)
4x Heinz Baby Juice (£1.00)
1x Foxes Ginger biscuits (£0.50)
1x ASDA handwash (£0.54)
4x ASDA party/loot bags (£0.65)
1x ASDA Pasta pot (£1.30)
4x ASDA Party gifts (£1.50)
The total bill came to £49.94.
When I checked the receipt the next morning, I was told that I had not bought 8 comparable items to check against.
Why was this? I had bought 9 different 'types' of items with varying quantities between them.
All the items were available from Tesco or Sainsbury's and none of them were fruit or veg which is sold by weight (if that matters), so I was expecting to find out if and how much I had saved...
Was it because the ASDA own brand items purchased were excluded from the comparison?
The big headlines are no good if they weasle out of their price guarantee in the small print...0 -
the party gifts and the party/loot bags may be ineligiblehelpful tips
it's spelt d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y
there - 'in or at that place'
their - 'owned by them'
they're - 'they are'
it's bought not brought (i just bought my chicken a suit from that new shop for £6.34)0 -
mysupermarket compare prices for identical or equivalent products, so branded products are compared with each other and own label products are only compared where mySupermarket validates the products as being comparable. For example ASDA Smart Price will be compared with other own label economy brands. Smaller stores such as Tesco Metro, Tesco Express, Sainsbury's Local and Sainsbury's Central aren't included in the ASDA Price Guarantee.
Categories that are not currently covered in the ASDA Price Guarantee include: Home, Electricals, Furnishings, Garden, Entertainment, Hardware, Sports, George, Kiosk, Jewellery, Pharmacy, Optical, Fuel, Photo-processing, Dry Cleaning and all online only products including financial services, flowers, mobile, travel and gifts.
How do MySupermarket decide if a product is comparable?
mySupermarket only compare like for like products (i.e. branded products that are identical or very similar own label equivalents) For very similar own label products mySupermarket ensure these products meet the same needs or are intended for the same purpose.
Ways in which mySupermarket do this include:
Identifying the key characteristics of the products including flavor, whether it is organic, Fairtrade, low fat, gluten free, free range or eco-friendly and ensuring that they are not matched in a way that gives any retailer an artificial advantage.
Where products are of a different size, weight or volume ensuring that the difference in size, weight or volume does not favour one retailer over another.
Compare goods where there is no more than a 10% difference in size/weight/volume and will ensure that the prices are adjusted so that the equivalent price of identical size/weight/volume products are compared.
Below are a few examples of products that may look like they should be matched but wouldn't meet this criteria:
ASDA Bananas by weight vs. Sainsbury's Bananas by weight - These products aren't comparable because Sainsbury's bananas are Fairtrade whereas ASDA’s are not.
ASDA leaf spinach 1kg vs. Tesco leaf spinach 1kg - These products aren't comparable because ASDA leaf spinach is chopped whereas Tesco's is the whole leaf.
ASDA Lean steak mince 500g vs. Tesco Beef Steak Mince 500g - These products aren't comparable because the ASDA steak mince is lean (lower fat content) whereas Tesco's is regular (higher) fat.
ASDA Little Angels Cotton Soft Baby Wipes (80) vs. Sainsbury's Little Ones Eco Baby Wipes (72) – These products aren't comparable because Sainsbury’s wipes are biodegradable whereas ASDA’s are not.
ASDA Paracetamol Tablets (16) vs. Sainsbury's Paracetamol Capsules (16) – These products aren't comparable because ASDA's are tablets and Sainsbury's are capsules.
ASDA Thin & Crispy 10 inch Meat Feast Pizza (341g) vs. Tesco Thin Crust Pepperoni Pizza (310g) – These products aren't comparable because the ASDA pizza has a larger variety of meat on its pizza while the Tesco one just has pepperoni.0 -
Thanks for this information Aesop, it has been really helpful. I have even saved this info on my pc, thanks againmysupermarket compare prices for identical or equivalent products, so branded products are compared with each other and own label products are only compared where mySupermarket validates the products as being comparable. I've made two successful claims so have two vouchers; can I use them both in one shop?
Yes just present them to the checkout operator to be discounted from your shopping.
Can I use my voucher in the same transaction as other coupons or money off vouchers in store?
Yes just present them to the checkout operator together.0
