No, total opposite, but morons who make sweeping statements about speeding kills wind me up :)

anyone with a degree of intellgence knows speeding doesn't kill, bad driving kills

Driving a car too fast is more likely to kill someone when a collision occurs, than someone who is driving at the correct speed.

Quick question - do all the Holy-Joes on here pontificating about 'not paying a fine by not speeding' claim not have exceeded a speed limit?
I have exceeded the speed limit on several occasions. But the difference is that when I get caught I don't start whinging on about the only reason I got fines was to line the pockets of the council. I also don't use the excuse that it was three o'clock in the morning, dry and clear weather, an open road and I am best driver in the world.

    Why are they there?
They are there to identify vehicles which are being driven in excess of the speed limit.

    1. There will be no hazard ahead if people remained within the speed limit.

Unfortunately you're wrong. Ther is a faction of motorists who simply panic when they see a police car or a speed camera, regardless of the fact that they are within the speed limit and are breaking no laws, they simply brake, that becomes the hazard;)
In which case they ought to hang up their keys and stop driving completely.

  • They are a road safety aid and to catch people who speed.

Errr - no. They're a money making scheme - end of story.

Otherwise, why else prosecute someone trying to slow traffic down before a speed trap?

    Why else hide speed traps?

Why else has at least one council decided to turn off cameras because they no longer get the money from them?

They are a road safety aid and to catch people who speed. Unfortunately there is only one recourse for the punishment which is to fine people and put points on their license. This is meant to act as a deterrent but obviously if your thick enough to speed and get caught then you deserve everything you get thrown at you do you not?

Or what punishment would YOU like to see given for speeding offences then?

I disagree totally with your holier than thou attitude, however this isn't the thread to discuss the benefits of speed cameras.

    So start one!!!

    You are wrong.
Oxfordshire council deactivated their camera since the Government withdrew its central funding because they don't make enough money to support the costs of catching speeding motorists. So Oxfordshire isn't raking in the money from speeders!
They are currently doing trials on how this is affecting the public and since the deactivation there has been an 88% increase in speeding and the community are concerned.
I believe that Oxfordshire Council may/are re-activating the cameras due to public concerns even though it's losing money.
