A few things,
Before doing the Phd, you need to do an MA. Science subjects will yet you skip the Masters stage, humanities don't
for a non science Masters, they are usually self funded, where are you going to get the money for this?
At Phd level, there is some funded courses but they are extremly competitive to get on. what will you do if you can't get on a funded Phd ?
once you have done your Phd, you will find yourself in the position of so many people like you,i.e. BA,MA & Phd. Who then ask what can i do with these ? the answer is not much apart from staying in academia which makes getting these positions again extremly competitive as every one has the same idea.
with the recent cuts, humatities have had their budgets slashed, uni's are shedding job in these subjects
An ex of mine, got 4 A's at A level, bachelors (got a 1st), masters (distinction) & a doctorate from russel group uni in english lit. she went into "academia".ten years on,all she has got to show for it, is 8 hours teaching a week at an ex-poly which is on a rolling contract that has to be renewed every semester, and it's looking likely that next time it wont be renewed.
dont get me wrong, dont mean to put you off,but I do get the impression may have watched "Educating Rita" once too often
The way it works is the MA takes a year off the PhD however if I get the 1st that I am on my way to getting I may be able to get straight onto the Phd as I already have the research skills modules done. You can do a PhD without a masters as long as you can demonstrate you have advanced research skills, often people start a PhD and only do 1 or 2 years so come out with a Masters. Or people start a masters and progress through to a PhD all in one.
If I cannot get onto a funded PhD I will apply for an associates research degree as I already stated. Or I will work like any other normal human being and apply again the next year.
I've just said what I will do with my PhD?? Or did you not read the fact that I want to work in the university..... I'm not bothered about budget cuts, if the job isn't there at the end of my education I will use my education to do something else. It isn't end of the world if I don't get a job in lecturing at the end of it. I can work in publishing for instance, or some form of editorial work. There are plenty of other avenues to go down especially as I already have work experience and am not just another student who has gone to university for the sake of it. I'm not naive and think I WILL get what I want. I make compromises in life and work.
You do realise the alternative is to drop out of university and live on benefits till I can actually work. Which one would you prefer me to do? And it isn't true that everyone has the "same ideas", the reason I get firsts is because I have original ideas, yes of course laws of probability states that someone else will have though of it too but its relative to the population of my course.
I have never seen Educating Rita
But its nice to know you think people shouldn't have ambitions.Money money money.

.
Thats an MPhil you are on about not an MA. MPhil is what you get after completing a year of a Phd. Those who come out with an MPhil are those who get kicked off their Phd's for not pulling their weight.
MPhil= Phd drop out
serious piece of advice, if you end up undertaking the Phd and come out with just an MPhil, you will be best not putting it on your CV at all.0 -

Probably worth you watching it, but please remember it is fiction.0 -

No thank you, I don't watch many films I prefer to read.
And I know what a MaPhil is, I'm refering to a conversation with the head of school regarding my options when I am graduated.Money money money.

LOL.
Just because you don't like some posts as they don't agree with your views you choose to be the forum police.
You only hear one side of a story on here and people should be allowed to put opposing views and motives. With your permission, of course.
It wasn't a matter of "not liking" some posts: it was a simple matter of objecting to the really disgraceful personal insults you hurled at the OP with absolutely no provocation or justification. And it appears that the forum mods agreed with me on that.
I'm as fond of reasoned discourse as the next person and quite enjoy discussing opposing views on all sort of subjects but it appears that you are not capable of it from what I've seen you post on here without descending to the children's playground form of debate. Sucks to be you.0 -

I don't think that's necessarily correct. Many of the 'MA level' courses at Cambridge for example are designated as an MPhil, and for that level of prestige (and price lol) then you'd definitely want to include that your CV. I don't think it's at all fair to say that an MPhil is for PhD 'dropouts' - it may be so in some universities but that's certainly not true across the board, just as a PGDip isn't always just for an MA 'dropout'.
And it's something of a myth that you *must* get an MA/MPhil before embarking on a PhD. It's definitely the the most common route but there are many exceptions. My own university offered to 'fast track' me through a PhD, meaning that I would not have taken an MA first, and this was in an arts/humanities subject. I know quite a few humanities/arts/social sciences students who've gone on to doctorate level study without a postgraduate qualification, it all depends on the student, the subject, the available funding and so many other factors.0 -
abby1234519 wrote: »Aha!! Now really I should HAVE to explain this however, I am one of those unlucky girls where contraception hasn't worked due to a !!!! up a nurse has made. So yes obviously if I hadn't "opened my legs" I wouldn't be pregnant but I took all other necessary precautions.
I study in Leeds and my average mark is a 79. Would you like me to explain what that means? That means that I am in the top 2% of my course.
Am I studying Meedja studies? No thank you, I'm currently working on my English Literature Degree so that I can then take a PHD and work as a university lecturer or teacher. Please don't patronise me.
So, person who thinks that getting pregnant means you must have a rather low IQ, I think you'll find you are slightly off target with those assumptions.
Sorry OP for hijacking your thread I merely mean to point out that people need help sometimes to get to a place where they can provide for their children.
I have sympathy with your finding yourself pregnant like that. Our youngest was definitely unplanned. He's turned out to be an absolutely lovely kid, though, and we love him and are very proud of him.
I do fear that your grades are going to suffer big-time when your baby is born. It's such a big deal being woken up at night and just generally having someone else to care for. Hats off to you for going through with the pregnancy, but I can see a good chance that you won't stay in the top 2% of your year. In fact, I think that you are being naively over-optimistic in thinking that this won't completely scupper your career plans. I guess that's a challenge for you. Come back and tell me I'm wrong when you've finished your PhD. I'd be delighted to hear that.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

So the fact that I worked for 5 years before starting university and am half way through my course doesn't count for anything.
Shut up.
Very best of luck with your degree. What are you studying?...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Why, is aiming for a first or being at a Russell group a method of contraception?
Education for women is THE best method of reducing the number of conceptions....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0
