  • I've been lead to believe by Shelter and my solicitor that after 6 weeks they HAVE to move us on to temp accommodation, that legally they are no longer allowed to keep families with children in B&Bs for any longer than that.

I am going by what I was told by Shelter and my solicitor, can I ask where you get your information from as I want to know what would actually happen so I can have an idea of what the future holds

    To quote Shelter.....

"From 1 April 2004, if you (or anyone in your household) have dependant children or are pregnant, you should only be placed in bed and breakfast in an emergency, and should not have to stay there for any longer than six weeks."

Note even their use of the word "should". If there is no alternative to B+B, then your stay will be longer.
  • I'm glad you've had a positive outcome EMG. Sounds like you're really suffering with your pregnancy, my sympathies. It's not easy this pregnancy business is it!

I am also having to move house 2 weeks before my due date. Scary stuff huh?

Have you discussed with your GP about whether you have SPD? I have this and find just walking is painful.

6 weeks B+B is a target, not a legal obligation. It's also an average figure for ALL families in B+B.

I was in a B&B for 5 months, people here have been put in 'mobile homes' on a local holiday park for yeras, now they're run out of those and are sending people with kids into B&Bs in really horrible areas with prositutes and drug dealers stood around outside. Nice

    Thanks EMG,
I think I will inform my LL now that they need to issue an official Section 21 purely because they are our neighbours and they are already putting a little pressure on us (nothing threatening at all, just lots of questions, they want to know if we can move out sooner then the 30th March! which considering I could go into labour any minute I do find that rather cheeky and a bit unrealistic of them!) Besides a Section 21 has to give 2 months notice so that will still give us a little more time.
I did suffer with PND after my last pregnancy so I really hope I dont get it again, I dont think being in a B&B will help.
I live in the South West where social housing is in high demand but not as much as London. Also I think I read somewhere that the South West is the 2nd most expensive area to rent or buy in comparison to wages after London (that may have changed)
I just want to be settled somewhere now, we are fed up with having to move house all the time. It wasnt so bad before we had children but our eldest will be starting school next September so we cant keep moving about.
It's a little annoying because our current LL's did say that this was going to be a long term let. Also they were given this house by the old man who used to live here - he had no family so when he passed away it was signed over to them. They have no mortgage to pay on the house and even said in their own words "we are in no rush to sell just putting it on the market out of curiosity"
I know our family planning is not their problem, after all they are just 'business people' in a sense, making money, but if that's the case then them being inconvienienced by us staying a little longer is not our concern either, we have to do what's best for our family.

    Thanks

Though with a roof overhead, running water and heating it is surely still better than the alternative?

But if they had not sold all the council houses we would not be in this mess, no?

Can tell you that here I can point out a whole road of 48 council houses now has about 8 council owned now and they've been chooped into tiny flats.

My friend had similar situation to OP, LL decided to sell, then she and her 3 LOs (6, 3 and 1) ended up watching hookers of an evening.

Its been the policy of every government for the last 35-40 years (so Conservative, Labour and Lib Dem) that housing is a private matter that should not be provided by the state. People seem happy, in general, with the policy (certainly nothing approaching a sizable minority has ever demanded an alternative is offered).

When I am feeling really cynical I suspect that it is part of an attempt to deal with the aging population problem:D

    Are you sure?

    Source- "Labour’s Plan for Housing"
We are the only party committed to building 10,000 council houses a year before the end of the Parliament."
Source: Simon Hughes, Lib Dem speaking in October 2010
"it’s a short paragraph in the manifesto: Investigate reforming public sector borrowing requirements to free councils to borrow against their assets in order to build a new generation of council homes and to allow them to keep all the revenue from these new homes. Over time we will seek to provide a greater degree of subsidy as resources allow to increase the number of new sustainable homes."

    My bolding.
