Thanks so much for this thread. It could have been me writing about our new dog. We got him on thurs, poor thing was ungroomed and flea-ridden. He was covered in angry sores and was scratching like mad.
I thought it was flea allergy, and wanted to see if once the frontline kicked in it would all calm down.
Having read all the posts though, I took him to the vet yesterday. Poor thing needed anti-biotics and steriod tablets. He's much happier already, and the fleas have gone. :j
Thanks so much everyone. I consider myself to be a pretty responsible pet owner, but without having read this I'd have waited longer before taking him to the vet. :TMMSSB Club Founder Member

Hi well taken dog to vet yesterday (put sudocream on him day before to try and help and it did seem to take some of the itching away) vet said she sees no trace of fleas on him so the spot on treatment seems to have worked but she has given him steroid tablets to help with the itching and he seems to be much much better already.
Thank you to everyone who offered their advice it was a great help0 -

Hi, my dog Harvey has had itchy skin every summer all his life, he doesn't have fleas or any infestation but is allergic to summer!! He has been on steroids every summer but this year is on anti histamine.
We went on holiday and he was in a friend's care but on our return he was raw in places where he had scratched and licked plus very scabby and some fur missing. He went to the vets yesterday and he said it is because he was stressed cos we were away and that has made him worse. He has given him steroids, antibiotics and ear drops plus he will now be on piriton for the rest of his life.Steroids can't be used long term as can cause more problems. I have ordered him some soothing shampoo and lotion plus antibacterial powder to soothe his bad spots.
Most people think itching is fleas but the vet said he is probably allergic to plants or tree pollen and not even in our garden, could come from streets away in the air.I am with the others who said go to the vet, it cost us £67 this time which we can't afford but when you have a pet you have to do this for them. If you can get a diagnosis and treatment then in future you can buy treatment elsewhere.0 -

pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaase we are having a nightmare of a time!!!!!!!!!!
my boyf's dog caught fleas from another dog in the park last friday 31st aug or maybe couple days l8r we think.
our house we rent is infested.
we only just realised on friday 7th sept (there) so all this time last week the fleas may have been in the carpets)
friday
bought BOB MARTIN SPOT ON, flea shampo, washed him, used spray on carpets, etc from pet store
saturday
we took him to the vet bought FRONTLINE, showered again, used fronline, sprayed everywhehouse with an insecticide RIP. We bought him a new bed, hoovered.
sunday
hoovered, sprayed
monday
at wits end!!
we're still getting them, honestly i want to leave the house, its disgusting, i cant work out why theyre still here, the frontline is supposed 2 work within 24 hrs.
the spray is supposed to kill the fleas, eggs instantly, but yesterday just from walking (hurridly) up and down the stairs i got one on my leg, in total yesterday i picked 4 off of me through whole day arghhhhhhhh! it makes my skin crawl, literraly i am stratching my skin like mad.
we even sprayed the bathroom where we gave him a bath. the thing is they're not jumping on my boyf (whos dog it is!!!) theyre attacking me! and i dont go near him! ive got loads of bits on me but my boyf's got 2!
i even bought an insect repellant and used on my legs but it still flipping jumped on me after!!! argghhhh?
he sits up all night, i dont get it why me?????????
weve been arguing at each other throats, cos of the hassle, hes annoyed @ me askin ......have u checked ure trousers/ have you checked ure socks bfore getting to bed??? i dont want them in the bed. im so frustrated at the situation i want to get it sorted.
i think im more agitated than him cos im the one getting bitten all the time!
i feel like im having OCD or sumthing, having to shakee my clothes inside out, scouring floors checking for them, checking my skin. running up the stairs.
i cannot live like this, i got no sleep last night, im seriosuly at my wits end, frustrated and upset. i just want to go back to normal, going about our business, and the house.
we just had a gas leak 2 wkks ago, and now its this
i will pay anything just to get them out!
do we get a flea bomb? how much where from
do we get it professionally fumigated where/how much?
plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz help i am so upset :0(0 -
