That's so amazing. I wish I could have used will power to stop smoking. The biggest reason in the world, getting to watch my kids getting married and I still couldn't stop :o
The greatest respect to anyone using will power to stop.

Good luck to you NTC, although it's not luck of course. It's willpower and having the will to stay off them.

  • Probably the biggest change for me is how much more I fit into my day - making time to stop my life to feed my nicotine addiction wasted SO much time! Every day I am thankful that I am free and clean of the nasty addiction! I like feeling 'clean'.

    SilkQuit stats:
Quit Time: One year, five months, three weeks, two days, 23 hours, 45 minutes and 42 seconds.
    16289 cigarettes not smoked,
    saving €7,032.86.
Life saved: 8 weeks, 13 hours, 25 minutes.

I just HAD to log in to say I am so so pleased for you - you certainly have changed your life around! Be proud....be very proud of yourself.

I remember we 'quit together' and the support from you and everyone else on here (and the other 2 threads, as I read every post) was what made such a difference to my quit.

    THANK YOU EVERYONE

Brilliant update Splishsplash, I am trying to imagine the size of that pile of fags as a bonfire. Now imagine striking a match and setting light to 7,000 Euro worth of cigs all in one go. Wow!!

There are just so many inspirational and helpful folks on MSE, this really is life-changing stuff in the making.

Just past a year on for me and I'm just beginning to deal with the weight gain and fitness.
    :j:T:j
Well done - that is brilliant! You must be feeling so much better.

  • Hi all, THIS POST MAY CONTAIN NOT NICE STUFFsuch as poo

Wow some good stages here! Well done everyone :j

I am on day 18 now and I thought I would share some of my personal stopping smoking symptoms to see if I am normal or not:D

First I will start with bloating, what the heck :rotfl: People have been asking if I am pregnant! Why can't boobies bloat:(

Heartburn, not something I have unless I eat certain foods (which I avoid) but I have had heartburn every night now for about a week.

Funny bowel movements:rotfl: not a bad thing I suppose but I am not used to having several poops a day!!!!!let alone a month!

Nausea in the mornings from not eating quick enough (No I am definitely not pregnant;) )

I have not been drinking water which is something I need to be doing? Can I put anything in the water, like a teabag :D Seriously though is it just tap water? I'll be getting the shakes from not enough caffeine :(

Also if anyone can recommend some sort of exercise for that would be fabtastic. I have arthritis in my knee which is killing me on the dancing wii thingymabob, I am ok just doing the moving about but if I have to bend it, it kills. I also have PGP which isn't too bad at the moment but it also gets my lower back too.

Any help is greatly appreciated guys and gals :)

Been having ‘her’ (so she says) Lexus this week, so that’s also helping. 1867mi in 9 days = still smelling fresh and not been smoked in yet!

Although I think I just want an excuse to save £10 a day on CC :rotfl:

  • Thanks, everyone for your kind words. Yesterday felt better than any birthday - but then, when you get to my age, birthdays are best forgotten!

Strange thing is, if I had not popped back here a few days ago, I may have not remembered my QUITDAY. {thanks =booboo=} That is because I no longer think about smoking. There comes a time when you have celebrated Christmas & other special occassions, suffered from stressful days, endured tragic times and not reached for a cigarette. Suddenly, you do not even think about having that cigarette. Because it is no longer a habit!

Wherever you are in your quit, this time will come.

I could have never done it by willpower alone, Lotus-eater. This thread, the support from Sue and others, kept me firm in my resolve.

The cessation service at my pharmacy kept me on track because I did not want them to see me as another failure.

I set myself goals. 6 months before my QUITDAY, I had a course of hypnotherapy because DS was getting married and I wanted to be smoke free. Hypnotherapy did not work: I became very depressed and reached for the cigarettes.

Then I had to go into hospital for a couple of days and was scared stiff about not being able to smoke. I did not want to be one of those sad folk huddled outside the hospital, dragging on as many cigarettes as possible. So I took the first step, went to the pharmacy and found this thread. The stay in hospital was a doodle.

Next goal. DS was leaving the country for a year and I wanted him to remember the smell of my perfume and not stale fags. After that, I found other reasons not to smoke and the rest is history.

It is not as simple as that - every quitter needs a tool kit no matter how they decide to quit. There are moments of weakness but we need something at hand to fight it. I must try to remember all my tools!

We, non-smokers, need to reward ourselves as much as possible. Finance is one of the main reasons for becoming non-smokers (after health) but we need the little rewards too - and that does not mean chocolate. Okay, so it is part of my 5 a day but it should not become a cigarette substitute.:)

I signed up for an initial course of 1-1 pilates (not that expensive in comparison to smoking) and then joined a small class for weekly sessons. I love it and it has become my new addiction. So gentle to begin with and now so challenging. Wish I had discovered it years ago....but then I could not have afforded it

You have the right mindset, Needstochange - you will succeed.:T

Good to see you Dundeedoll - I watched your "quit" and you have come so far.:T

Spicyprawn - the NOT NICE STUFF has been discussed often on here! The bloating is a common side effect and it will go away once your digestion gets used to not having nicotine in the system.

I am not sure about the heartburn but maybe it is connected to what I have said about the bloating. Can you ride it out with Gavescon or similar; just until you can see if it is a passing thing? Hopefully, someone on here has the answer for you.

Ahh, bowels! :o Stange, because most folk complain about the constipation. You are lucky! Could be normal for the non-smoking you.

I think the water is for the first few days: flushing the system and to drink whenever the urge to smoke comes on. Any type of water. If you are okay drinking coffee and it is not making you crave for a cigarette, then why deny yourself? I began drinking blue tea when I became a non-smoker and have not given up the coffee habit. That would be asking too much!

Excerise - see the bit above about Pilates. Some non-smokers on here have begun the NHS Couch to 5K programme though not too sure how that will affect your knee and PGP. Only you know your limits.

Have a great smoke free weekend, everyone.

  • Hi all

Just been reading and running lately - decorating entire house prior to putting it on the market - so not having much time.

Quietly cursing the fact that if it hadn't been smoked in as much - it wouldn't be as minging and i wouldn't having to re paint - could have got away with a good clean:o

OH is slowly being shoved out the door as the number of newly painted - 'you can't smoke in here on pain of death' rooms increases:rotfl:

However had to bob a quick post on to say how fab it was read that Oldreekie had notched up 2 years - what a great achievement, and proves to all of us that it can be done..so well done you!!!

Hugs to all other quitters - keep on keeping off the fags
