The Giving Up Smoking Thread - Part 3

Well done everyone.
The challenges that are new situations need forethought - such as going out for the forst time since stopping. Alcohol does reduce the resolve & lowers your guard, so you have to be careful. I think it is easier since smoking was banned in pubs really. There are some things that are hard to deal with. One difficulty I had was being with others who smoked, so I sorta hid away for a while until I felt stronger.
I had one friend who believed that she could smoke only when she wanted to - take it or leave it & she would say, go on just have the one. I kept away from her as wasn't/am not able to just have the one & I won't ever forget that.
Really great to hear how well you're all doing - you are giving yourselves the best present ever.0 -

I could say that giving in to that kind of pressure "ruined my life" but it's rather dramatic and an easy excuse. But it's nearly true and you've been so sensible, Choille.0 -
I think I know exactly what you mean as I stopped first over twenty years ago & hit a bad time & someone said that to me & I took the cig, just the one & another, just the one and another...... & twenty years later I stopped again.
I will never be able to just have the one & now I actually don't want to try - so that's good.0 -
Needtochange - Great you've got a quit kit, didn't realise that they still do those. The Scottish ones were a bit of a damp sqib - a CD & a few bits of gum & loads of lurid literature - that was it.0

no its really good (well I think it is)
i got:
a money saving calculator thing
a really good anti stress toy
a chart with loads of stickers to track your success (OK OK i know its play school stuff but I love to be able to visible "reward" myself
a quit planner
some stuff you cant open until one week off
and of course loads of lurid leaflets
I ordered it on here
NHS Quit Kit
it arrived 2 days later - pretty good for the good old NHS:j29th Feb Quit Day :j0 -
That sounds pretty good to me.
The NHS is helpful - they realise that is will save them money in the long run I suppose.
When I eventually got a meeting with a cessation nurse she scared the Devil out of me in some ways - shook the tar cube thingy - showing me what my lungs were filled with & told me I would cough it all up - What all at once I asked? As there was a lot of it in the cube..........
But that didn't happen.. The coughing it all up, but there again I used to cough it up each morning when I smoked.... coffee, three fags and a dash good cough.....too much detail I suppose. But phlegm figures large in the stopping smoking stuff.0 -

Hi all...
Not been on for a few pages now and its great to see soo many new names and soo many positive stories.
Currently on day 35 of the willpower method and to be honest, i just had to count how many days it was as i no longer knew. i am definitely an ex smoker now!
Life has gone on, i have been out for birthdays, the pub, a leaving do, job interviews and dealing with the ex (a very strssful occasion lol) and havent even thought about doing it. For those newer folk on here, i also live with my girlfriend who still smokes 20+ a day and despite a few phases of her smoke making me feel queasy, i barely even notice when she lights up now.
Im so glad i stopped and only wish i had done this sooner. I feel much better about myself and even mentally stronger for overcoming this. I have also saved £250 towards a holiday in this time!!
The people on this forum are great and its nice to know others are supportive when you face such a massive challenge. So a big thank you to everyone on here!
Keep up the good work everyone, Stick with it, its soo worth it!0 -
I came to post here a few days ago but got put off by the squabbling...who cares what method people use to stop smoke? We're not all the same and what works for one person might not work for the other. Good luck to all, surely we should all be on the same side here?!
Anyway, I'm sprinting towards the three week mark, which for me is incredible. I feel better, my smokers cough has disappeared, and I think my skin looks a bit brighter already. And the £100+ I've saved is obviously a bonus too!
I've also managed my first hurdle, alcohol. Managed two nights tipsy without having one (now granted I wasn't out with a pile of smokers, so that could be another issue, but I'll face that when I come to it!)
I can't wait to hit the month mark, hopefully if I can get to there there'll be no looking back!
Hello and welcome to the thread.
Sue-UU, the chief supporter of this thread, is extremely unwell at the moment, so I have PM'd you a copy of the welcome message she sends to all newbies. Hope it helps. Do come here to post as often as you wish - hopefully, someone will be around to help you.
