CK- If the temptation is bad consider having a bath, going to bed - your allowed to do almost owt. And remember that cravings don't last long. Good to have a distraction that involves doing something that wouldn't have involved you smoking. If you have an open fire then put the fags on it - best to destroy them completely to avoid temptation.

Done, and they’ve made my house smell strange!

Going off for a soak, so see you soon guys! :D

My metre is a silk Quit version 2 Needstochange & It's showing that I've saved £5,800 which is fantastic - fancy spending that on cigs....
I had to fight to get help here on the NHS but the woman I got was great & she would phone me up. I think you're right it does depend on who you get.
Sue on here was marvellous as were the fellow quitters & we used to cheer each other on, buddy up. Old Reekie stopped a few days before I did & we sorta went through the whole up & downs together - which helped loads just talking it through.

Glad you chucked the fags out CK. I had to do that when I stopped as there were times when I wobbled so I removed all my paraphanalia - cig papers, tobacco - even chucked out my ashtrays.
My elderly cat got wheezy & as I live in a caravan it was pretty stinking with me smoking in here - so that was a big decider & I've still got my cat even though he's nearly 20. The ceiling & walls were orangey brown in here.................geee too much info now I guess.
  • Thank you so much for your support choille - I knew I could rely on MSE :)

I did use the NHS service last time I gave up but I found the process not especially useful for me, I think it depends on who you get as your nurse and mine was wholly uninterested :D I have ordered one of the quit kits so that should be here tomorrow.

I cant use the usual quit meters Im afraid as I have a mac and cant find a decent one that is compatible - anybody else using a mac? I am quite keen to monitor my progress though so may set my own system up that can keep an eye on weight at the same time :)

Thanks again for your support and I will be here daily no matter what happens :)

If you've got a mac, perhaps you have an iphone - here's a few iphone apps so one of them may help. http://www.switched.com/2010/08/23/11-iphone-smoking-apps-for-kicking-the-habit/

Have you tried it?. many people I know are free of smoking because they took the course.

E-cigs, the jury is out maybe 10 years from now they may have enough data to know whether it is a safe alternative.I am free of nicotine for over 6 months.

Surely this is the aim of everyone on this thread
Btw, if you want to compare Champix and e-cigs directly, then type, "Champix ruined my life" and "e-cigarettes ruined my life" into google.
See which gives you the most reading material.

And Champix started being used in 2006, about the same time as e-cigs started being used by lots of people. So in a way we're all guinea pigs as no one knows the long term effects of Champix either.

There are plenty of health warnings about Champix, from all the major health organisations. Wikipedia gives a maximum abstinence rate of 33.2%.

What do they say about e-cigs? Not a lot, it's not proved that it is a viable NRT (you only need to look at the vaping forums to see how often it works) and it contains nicotine, that's about it. That it's not proved it's safe, yet there are plenty of stories about how unsafe Champix is, none about e-cigs.

Y'know, if we're going to be honest, lets get the whole story out, shall we?

NRT gum has a pretty bad time on google as well.

  • Please lets not get into a tizzy about which way of quitting is safest/best/healthiest - i seem to remember that's what kicked it all off last time.

Can't we just accept that everyone has the right to a personal choice when it comes to quitting. All replacement products have pros and cons.

I used Champix - but i would never tell anyone else that they are wrong in what they choose whether that be
    e-cig/patch/gum/hypnosis etc etc

If we are all here to support each other through a stressful time - i personally don't see what is constructive about making someone feel bad over what method they have chosen and trying to convert them to another.

Sorry that's only my opinion and i'm entitled to it

Sending warm wishes to all who are struggling and hopes for better days ahead

Very right, lets hope we can put this to bed now and all the picky comments stopped, by everyone.

I couldn't agree more Chrissie. I did formulate a post earlier but it was no where near as well put as yours.

We are all grown ups on here, so let's concentrate on getting off, staying off & supporting each in those attempts - that's what this thread is about.
  • Hello Everyone :)

Crikey bit of a heated debate, we all do what we feel is best for us at a particular time, I do not believe there is any right or wrong way og quitting as long as you move forward towards your goal then who cares? I am no expert in this field however I have tried a number of different products over the years so have a little knowledge and experience. For me I had, had enough of the replacement products and failing every time I used them, but that is just my own personal experience, it is not necessarily right and it is not necessarily wrong, it is accurate for me :)

I do not think you can really compare Champix and E-Cigs as essentially they are 2 completely different products, one is a nicotine replacement product and the other is well a cold turkey replacement I suppose, with 1 product you hopefully end up completely nicotine free with the other you end up still nicotine dependant but without all the other nastiness contained with the tobacco, so for me I do not see how an accurate comparison can be made.

    Anyway................................................

    Champix Day 5

Today is my 5th day on Chanpix, I did notice a difference in me today, I got up very late this morning so did not have time for my daily ritual of 3 fags and 2 lattes before moving out of the house it was a case of up washed dressed and out of the house on the school run! After returning home I then set about my other daily routine of cleaning the fire out, chopping a log up getting the fire going, making a coffee sorting out my work for the day etc etc. Before I knew it, it was 10:30 and having a fag had not even occurred to me, for me this is very strange as generally upsetting my usual morning routine results in me chain smoking to make up for it! The strange part is I had no craving, no urgency to have a fag nothing whatsoever.
I was tempted to give up there and then but the advice I was given about these tablets is it is important to give up in the 2nd week when you are on the stronger dose, so begrudgingly (ha ha yeah right) I had a fag, then the next strange thing happened, it tasted really weird, almost metalicy, definitely not the same as usual. It did not stop me smoking it however and has not stopped me throughout the day, although I have smoked less than I usually would, so far today I have had 6 which for me is a definite reduction, I estimate usually I would have had 12-14 by now.
No side effects worth mentioning yet although I do feel a little more tired than usual hence the sleeping in this morning. No nausea, no vivid dreams ( I was looking forward to these :) ) no headaches nothing!

All seems to be moving in the right direction at the moment so fingers crossed this time I might just succeed :)

    Good luck to you all.
