Brenda Just HAD to sign in to wish you all the very best for tomorrow.
As Sue says, fighting back and being positive is 1/2 the battle won.
I'm sure we will all be thinking about you and look forward to an update when you feel up to it.

Hello everyone
Really glad I found this thread, today is day number 1 for me and my long suffering better half, I have been smoking for around 20 years (20 a day) and the wife has been smoking for around 25 years (20 a day).
Before, whenever 1 of us wanted to quit the other didn't so it would have been incredibly difficult with 1 still smoking, this is the first time in 15 years that we have decided at the same time we want to quit! So I have grabbed the moment with both hands
We did the ritual getting rid of the last supply last night then got up this morning ready to go, it has been around 5 hours so far so no great achievement yet but at least heading in the right direction for a change. 5 hours for me is not bad TBH I have usually smoked a good 5 by now so am already feeling positive lol
Anyway just wanted to chime in and say hello really more than anything and make official our challenge to quit, sure I wlll be back soon for advice and help not expecting it to be plain sailing far from it.
I was thinking about E-Cigs and patches and the other potions that are out there, I see these as an alternative way of getting nicotine, to me that is not really quitting you still getting the drug just a different way, makes no sense to me. I understand everyone is different and for some people this way works great but for me I want to quit QUIT lol as in NO nicotine whatsoever in any way shape or form, for me cold turkey makes the most sense, get it over and done with
I am probably wrong but am presuming after the first week or 2 thing will get substantially easier, well I am hoping so anyhow. Coping really well so far fingers crossed it continues"You can measure a man's character by the choices he makes under pressure"Sir Winston Churchill0 -
I would like to thank everyone who has posted on the 3 threads and for all the encouragement and support I've received during the last 12 months - I KNOW I would NOT be nicotine free now, had I not found this thread!
I read every single post, starting with Jo 1972's very 1st one and it really helped me to alter my mindset about smoking.
On previous attempts I always felt a sadness at having 'given up' - I was missing smoking and all I really wanted was to have 1.
Giving up something sounds as though you are depriving yourself.
This time I have 'stopped' smoking. I honestly do not feel those 'hankerings'
I am so thankful I have stopped.
My thoughts are with Brenda (drsmum)Thank you!
(If you are 1 of my FB friends, PLEASE do NOT mention smoking on my wall, as I was a secret smoker and I'd rather it wasn't brought to light now. Thx)Nicotine Free since 01.08.2010 :j:j:j

A warm welcome to the thread, UnderPressure and your Wife, and congratulations on starting back on a new new, healthy life, the one you used to have before smoking got in the way of it.
I've sent 2 PMs, please read the Advice and Tips one thoroughly as it helps make sense of things and why things are so useful. Be proud of every hour you successfully get through and never belittle it; having been smokers for so long we know jolly well that to go for just one hour without one is amazing, so to have gone for a Day is such fantastic news and you both should be so very proud!!! Keep praising yourselves, rewarding yourselves too.
To exercise just as much as you're able is really good and helps release the endorphins which help you feel great and, in turn, helps you get over any cravings. Please let us know how you're getting on - no matter what happens. These threads have seen so many people say goodbye to smoking for good - we would love it if you too added your names to the list!!!
Try the following pledge every day, it's so very helpful.
Tell yourself every morning "I'm not going to smoke at all today, but if I wish to, I may smoke tomorrow." Repeat that pledge every morning, it maks things more bearable to do it in bitesizes.
I wish you and your Wife all you need to kick this habit and it'll be a whole lot easier if you're both doing so together. Keep supporting each other...and loving each other. :A:A
All very best wishes, Sue x

Hi all,
Just found this thread and am hoping it will be the motivation for me to quit for good.
I've been smoking for 10 years and only ever used to smoke a few a day (but lots when out drinking!). I quit when pregnant with my son but stupidly started again a couple of months after he was born, a few here and then that soon became 15-20 a day as I was home all day on maternity leave. I tried to quit again a while ago and only lasted 3 days. Started again and felt like a failure so quit again and again only lasted 3 days.
But now I'm hoping I'm ready to quit once and for all. I intend to quit tomorrow when there is no tobacco in the house.
Reasons why I want to succeed:
- The thought of not being there for my boy as he grows up horrifies and petrifies me
- I've just started to feel breathless when smoking which is v scary
- Most of the time I don't even like it
- I don't want to smell
- I've aged horribly and want nice skin again
- money!
- don't want to set a bad example for my son
So hope you don't mind me joining this thread but think I'm going to need some support through this (like some others I was a secret smoker so can't really share any achievements with family).
So my last cigarette will be this evening and the start of my new smoke free life will be tomorrow - wish me luck!0 -
Sue Thank you for your lovely post - it really means a lot to me. :A
Fee Thank you too. My first post on here wasn't until 5/8/2010, but I may well have 'seen' you from then on
You have done fantastically well. It really is a wonderful feeling, isn't it?
Larmy & Sue were the first 2 people to answer my post and both reduced me to tears with their PMs - I was quite ill at the time and had just split up with the love of my life (so far) and the fact that 'strangers' on an internet forum cared just set me off
Their constant support kept me going.
Flossieff Well done for deciding to stop smoking, finding this thread and posting on it! That's 3 positive steps you've taken already :T
You have listed some brilliant reasons to stop - keep thinking of them during difficult moments.
It also may help you to read through the threads for motivation (It gave me an understanding of stopping smoking and changed my mindset completely - I too had had other quits and all I wanted was a ciggie)
If you look on the 1st page of this thread there is a link to the original 1st thread and on the last page of that is a link to the 2nd.
I am going to send you a couple of PMs - hope you may find them to be some help.
Yes, I was a secret smoker, so couldn't get support in RL.Nicotine Free since 01.08.2010 :j:j:j

Some great advice there DD!
Hiya FEE it's so very good to see you again!!! :j You're doing brilliantly, but a little help with the weight perhaps - still keep on taking water to fill you up so you don't get so many 'hunger calls'. I know, I'm still nagging on and on about it, but......!Remember Feedumall and how she was always going on about Ice Pole/Pops?? Whenever you feel a little peckish instead of reaching for something rich in calories......reach for the Ice Poles!!!! I'm so very proud you've kept so happy and FREE from those evil little devils, FEE, you're a great motivator. Thanks so much for coming back again, it's always lovely to see quitters return!
A warm welcome to the thread flossieff! Very well done on making such a great decision - BUT - sorry if I sound a little harsh;
- if you really do want to quit and
- if you really do mean all the positive reasons to QUIT
then why don't you do yourself a huge favour and Edit your post above and get rid of all the negative reasons of why you might not make it?!!!You're appearing to set yourself up for a possible failure at the very beginning.....which is most likely the reason why you've not succeeded for long in the past. Think about it, flossie, does that sound as though it could be true?
Try the following pledge every day, it's so very helpful.
Tell yourself every morning "I'm not going to smoke at all today, but if I wish to, I may smoke tomorrow." Repeat that pledge every morning, it maks things more bearable to do it in bitesizes.
I'm delighted you've joined the thread, please always let us know your feelings, it's vital and really helps you to help yourself. There's plenty of support here for you, never forget that. Also never forget - that you're never alone in quitting..and so many others can share in and relate to all you're experiencing, and vice versa of course.
All the best in kicking the habit and staying to watch your little lad grow up....an amazing incentive to stop anyone in their tracks.
Please read through all the advice and tips in my PM that I've sent, read thoroughly each day I think you'll find it very helpful.
