£414 gas bill!!!!

  • Thanks for your help, I will ring Edf to dispute it. We have always had the same meter, it's a new build and we've lived here for 4 yes so the meter has never been changed. I did move to Scottish power for 1 ate so I wonder if edf made a mistake when we went back to them and set the account up incorrectly.

    Thanks again

This is a very interesting thread as I have just had a massive gas bill for my property for the last quarter! I am in a 2 bed house, the only things that use gas are the heating/water which I have on for about 3 hours 4 tops each day and a gas hob which I dont even use every day! Everything else is electric! I am only in the house during the evenings and weekends so nothing is used whilst I am out. My bill came to 220 for gas for the quarter and 180 for electric, I thought the electric would have been much higher. My question is...I am with EON, how do you find out what they have your meter down as i.e. imperial or metric - thanks

It's shown on your bill, if during the gas unit to kwh conversion an imperial conversion factor of x2.83 is applied, then you are being billed on imperial units.
Bear in mind that your heating, hot water and cooking form by far the largest part of your total energy bills-not your electric lighting and other peripheral devices.

On the right side of your bill it states cu m or cu ft.
  • I've double checked the serial number and it does match the same one as on the bill. Their office is closed now so I will try again tomorrow. Thanks again for your help

You now need to find all of your old bills if possible, your supplier will give you copies if you ask, and work out what you are owed. I would try and do this yourself, working it out as a cash amount needing refunding on each bill, as your supplier will try and do it the easy way which will probably work out to your detriment.
  • You make it sound rather simple molerat lol but how do I work out what I'm owed? Is there an idiots guide? Thanks

depending on your usage over the last month or so your bill may be correct, I think I have used about £5 a day gas over the last few weeks and that is with being really careful with the heating

You will need to take into account how much water you are using for showers/baths etc as well as the heating.

I have spoken to my friends and with it being so cold they are also using at least £5 a day some are using more

You need to take each bill and check if it has been calculated correctly. This is simply taking the kWh figure and dividing by the unit figure. If the answer is around 32 it is wrong, if around 11 it is correct. If incorrect you need to rework the figures, divide the kWh by 2.83 and work out the costs accordingly. You will need to find out how the unit split, discounts and gas transporter costs work, either fixed sums or percentages. It is fairly simple maths but will take some time.

The main thing to deduce first is how long this has been going on, i.e. if it's since the supply was connected when you moved in 4 years ago, or if it's somehow happened since.
So start by going back to your oldest bill and seeing if that is imperial or metric units, then work forward until you find the point at which the error has occurred.
Quite a bit of detective work to do, but well worth it, as you're likely to get a nice fat credit at the end.
