£414 gas bill!!!!

I wondered if anyone can help....I've just had a gas bill from EDF for the period 29/9 - 21/12 for a shocking £414.81.

Now I know it has been cold but this is the highest gas bill I have ever had in the 4 years of living in this property. It's a 3 bed, 3 storey semi, we don't have the heating on all the time (although it has been on more than normal due to the cold) but this total seems extremely high to me.

We are with EDF, we have a gas cooker and a standard boiler (not combi). The hot water is on a timer.

On the 2nd Oct my reading was 06032, on the 21st Dec it was 06504. When I rang to give them my reading I asked if the difference between the two readings seemed high (as I have no idea) and they told me it wasn't and that would be quite normal at this time of year. My bill is broken down as follows:

Amount of last bill: £57.02
Payments: - £102
Gas used: previous 6032c
latest: 6504c
units: 472
kwh: 14988
kwh split: first 609@ 7.000 pence = £42.63
next 14379 @ 2.891 pence = £415.70
Total = £458.33

gas transportation charge - £9.08
d debit discount - £27.50
gas dual fuel discount - £2
vat refund - £1.48
vat - £23.36
total charges for this period - £459.79
total for this period - £414.81

I don't understand how gas or electric bills work and just don't know whether this is right as it seems so expensive to me. CAn anyone advise?

Many thanks

That is high. Does your meter read ft3 or m3 ? It will be printed on the meter.

On part of the statement which i get from EDF there is usually a graph telling you how much you used last quarter and how much you used in the same quarter this time last year. have you checked it.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • I'm not sure what it says on the meter, I will check tomorrow when it's daylight.

On the graph it states (estimated daily usage) :

This qtr last yr: 0 (not sure why as I was with them last yr but I should have an old bill I can check)
    last qtr: 0.35
    This qtr: 5.68

    My previous readings were:

    4/5 - 05937
    7/6 - 05991
    02/10 - 06032
    21/12 - 06504

That does seem very high! I'm with EDF and have used 61.00 since Nov 1st, I've not had the heating on constant, but I haven't been stingy with it either, something doesn't sound right. What tariff are you on?

  • I have just checked to make sure I took the no's down correctly when I gave them the reading and it's now 6605 but it's too dusty and dark for me to see if it says ft3 or m3
  • It states "dual fuel gas tarrif direct debit" on the bill
  • Apologies I meant to say, the heating is on for aprox 1/2hr in the morning and maybe 1-2hrs at night although it's on longer at the weekends.

    21/12 - 06504

Are you sure that 6032 reading was correct ?

That means you have used 101 units since the last read which is 8.5 a day, reasonable for a metric meter but not for imperial. A metric unit is around 11.3 kWh and an imperial is around 32 kWh, it is not unknown for energy suppliers to mess the readings up.

In the same period as your bill I used 537 metric units with my heating on 24/7 which cost £160. Your bill ihas been calculated using imperial units.
  • I'm pretty sure it was molerat as I've been ringing them so that I have accurate bills rather than estimated. That was my Summer bill and I didn't have a boiler for over a month so was using the emersion to heat the water for that period until the boiler got fixed.
