That means you have used 101 units since the last read which is 8.5 a day which is reasonable for a metric meter but not for imperial.
Indeed it equates to 187kWh per day, so equivalent to almost 8kW running flat out 24/7 for 80 days. That seems a hell of a lot.

I'm pretty sure it was molerat as I've been ringing them so that I have accurate bills rather than estimated. That was my Summer bill and I didn't have a boiler for over a month so was using the emersion to heat the water for that period until the boiler got fixed.

What happened to your boiler for a month? Did someone disconnect it or just switch it off?
  • A circuit board went so we had to wait for a friend (whose a qualified plumber) to fix it once he was back from his holiday. As it was Summer and we were using the immersion for hot water we just switched it off at the wall but was still using gas for cooking on he hob
  • I feel ashamed to Ask but how do I know if I should be on metric or imperial? Thanks

You are being billed in imperial units, 14988 kWh / 472 units = 31.75 = imperial.

Your meter will have either m3, cu m or ft3, cu ft, 100's cu ft printed on the dial.

An imperial meter is billed at approx 32 kWh per unit and a metric one at 11.2 kWh per unit. If you have a metric meter and are being billed as an imperial one you are paying 2.83 times too much for your gas.

It doesn't matter which metering you have, but unless you tell us what is on your meter no-one can advise you if you are being billed correctly.
It's clearly marked on the front, if it's dark then use a torch.

  • I have just been and cleaned the inch of dust off of the unit and it says m3.

Does that mean I'm being over charged?

Yes !! You are being charged 2.83 times the correct amount. You need to get the serial number from the meter and check it against the bill then phone your supplier and tell them you have a metric meter and are disputing the bill. You also need to get all your old bills out and check them. When did you have a meter changed, the date and readings should be on a sticker on the meter.

Sounds like you do not read your meter on a regular basis if the dust is that thick...unless they have changed your meter since you may well have been overcharged for the last 4 years! Dig out your old bills and check the billing calcs on them.
