Overweight Hand luggage

Hi, I'm flying tomorrow to Edinburgh from East Midlands with BMI Baby and have a 10kg hand luggage allowance.

Ive packed my case and it weighs in at 11.2kg. Does anybody know what the charge on that excess would be?

I'm only taking hand luggage and I've already checked in online

Thanks in advance

  • You wouldn't be charged an excess, you'd be asked to pay to place the baggage in the hold. If there is something in there you don't want to go in the hold, I suggest you adjust the bag's weight so it complies with the regulations.

Try and get the excess into your pockets

Yes I think that would be the best option. It's because I'm taking an XBox back with me.
What would be the cost if they did make me take my case as checked in luggage?
I can only see on their terms about excess baggage, not ex hand luggage.

I could be wrong (long time since I have dealt with BMIBaby) but I think the airport charge for a checked bag is £20.
    Gone ... or have I?

Might be cheaper to post it to Edinburgh.

Just stuff the extra in a rucksack and carry as a handbag my son travels a lot and has never been questioned about his 'handbag' he mostly travels without checking in luggage just hand luggage and his rucksack.. as long as the rucksack can go under the seat in front of you its not a problem

Don't do this! They will charge you for a second bag. :D

I agree - with HDNL or equivalent is would only be a few pounds door to door.

Great if it works, but on a one bag only airline, not the best advice.

Its unlikely they will check so long as the bag fits within the cabin baggage measurements, and you don't make the bag look overly heavy when waiting to board. However, is there anything you can take out and not take with you? Do you have anything like a coat or heavy sheos/boots included in your hand luggage that you could wear on the flight? If you have a book packed in your luggage too, take that out and carry it - people often read in the departure lounge so it's not unreasonable to carry that - it will help bring the weight down a bit.
