I don't think we've got a 'Martin1981' nor does 'Martyn1981' need to remind all of us that Cardew has a long history or reading whatever he wants into other people's posts then criticising them for it.

I'm also sure that people are rperfectly able to work out for themselves what they're paying for a particular commodity and don't need to be told that someone else might be paying more. Just concentrate on telling us how we can pay less.

Another post that completely avoids the issue?

    This is what you stated:

we do dishwashing nearly every day instead of storing it for a full load.

Some silly people could interpret that as you don't always have a full load!

Huge contribution to the debate about Martyn and Martin, I have added my thanks for that gem.

Just checked some facts and figures for our dishwasher & washing machine. Water costs are based on metered Bristol Water supply and Wessex Water sewage (one of the most expensive areas in the country for water costs).

Our usual washing machine cycle (Cottons Eco 40) uses 42 litres at a combined metered water/sewage cost of 15p. 1.02kWh is used per cycle.

Our usual dishwasher cycle (Eco) uses 16 litres at a combined metered water/sewage cost of 5p. 1.2kWh is used per cycle.

Each cycle's power consumption equated to about 10% of household daily import before our PV was installed (although not run every day of course).

Thanks, 15p seems to be in line with my suggested typical figure.
However the cost of water for an extra wash could be anything between 8p and 14p with a new machine in Severn Trent area; ranging to 50p in extreme cases for an old machine in the South West.

I don't know what the average
might be across the UK - I would have thought 15p????

There is no 'issue'. No sane person dissects every simple remark in everyday conversation.

Eric - I'm a little confused. Do you now use your dishwasher without a full load, whereas before solar you would only do a full load?

I'd like to join the burgeoning Non Sequitur club, but I think I'd get expelled quite quickly for pertain replies to other posts, instead of the required totally-unconnected-to-the-post-I'm-replying-to universally favoured unknowingly by members.

Eric - I'm a little confused. Do you now use your dishwasher without a full load, whereas before solar you would only do a full load?

It's actually much simpler than that.

The dishwasher always runs full (or pretty near). But there are some items that although used regularly might not need a proper clean very often. Teapots are one example - rinse out when done and use again next time - but there are others (& I shan't bother to list them).

When I'm paying for electricity, we'll wait several days to accumulate a full load of 'reslly dirty' itms; if not, we'll chuck in the teapot, oven shelves etc. . . .

But how many people really wanted to hear that level of detail - not many I suspect although won't be surprised to hear one 'member' wants to know how many times a month the teapot gets processed fully. :rotfl:

    Re cost of water:

Afraid I don't have water usage figures for our machines but happy to use SDJ's
Our usual washing machine cycle (Cottons Eco 40) uses 42 litres.

Our usual dishwasher cycle (Eco) uses 16 litres
which are no doubt fairly typical.

I think (**) our marginal cost for metered water is around £1.50 pcm which would produce water costs of 6p & 2p respectively.

** I couldn't lay my hands on a recent water bill to find exact cost so tried to find answer from SevernTrent website. Answer not readily visible and logging into 'my account' kept telling me that a two second delay in clicking on 'view bills' constituted a 'long delay' so they'd logged me out. Tried instead to ask question via their so called 'email facility' (which is nothing of the sort but just an entry form !) and recieived an acknowledgement that they might reply to my query some time in the next ten days.

I should add the caveat that both appliances are under 2 years old, and are therefore likely to be more efficient that 'average'.

Every watt we use in this way means an extra watt (watts?) that will have to be generated from fossil fuels and conveyed (at some loss) to our neighbours.

I didn't install SPs to 'help my neighbours' and if I didn't export any electricity at all they would be no worse off than if I hadn't bothered; indeed, they'd still be benefiting' in that I'm not now buying as much electricity as I might so less needs to be generated elsewhere.
Your misunderstanding of my point seems to stem from not discerning the 'green and ethical' viewpoint from which it was made from. The loss I was referring to was transmission inefficiency from the power station to our neighbours.

Sorry Kernel but it's still not a 'loss' it just isn't as big a gain as it might have been. You would no doubt say that my (even closer than you) neighbour is causing a loss to the environment because he has a South facing roof with no SPs on it !

If I invite you across for tea every Sunday for the next few weeks but then have a weekend away, you might perhaps put up a message here saying "Eric has stolen my free tea" - but don't expect a flood of sympathy :D
