  • I'm in! You are an absolute breath of fresh air! Compensates for the dog I guess :p

I do all my own car repairs, the only thing that beat me was a diesel. i sold it on for scrap value and its beaten them too. Just wish I'd had the space to strip and sell for parts :money:.

  • So glad you like Ubuntu, I've been using it for some time now, it 'just works'. I would give one word of advice tho, don't upgrade immediately when a new version is released , let the ubuntu community sort out the glitches first. I find pretty much everything I need works with ubuntu, just a few games that won't, and I remember an experiment when it was the only OS that hackers couldn't get into.

My own current obsession is the cost of heating (do I really need central heating on?, I never had central heating for the first 45 years of my life, I'm still here lol, so it's turned to frost setting and cost of gas and elec using halogen heaters in room I am using plus fan heater for when I'm in the kitchen was £1. 84 yesterday including a load of washing....wouldn't linger in my bathroom tho lol!)

Good luck with all your moneysaving, (will be watching for ideas :))

No robsmum, it wasn't :D. She can sew, so she gave me the look mams give their little uns, when they try something for the first time (but it's a bit pants); the ahhh bless them look :rotfl:....
AlwaysHappy, I vsiualised this and it's stuck in my head now, "few nights shut eye on frankensteins head". As long as I didn't wake up with my tongue in his eye and drooling, I think it would be okay :p:rotfl::p. Thanks to everyone else for their comments/advice .
I'd better update you all on how I've been doing:

    Sealed Pot Challenge:
A grand total of £1.01 for me today :j...
I have to share this with the group though...I had to go back to the drawing board today, with the 'grand design'. There was a little accident today :D, it involved me, the pot, a balloon, and paper mache :p...it blew up on me didn't it :rotfl:, right when I was in front of it and it was covered in gloopy paper mache. I swear some shot past my face, it was everywhere (even on the fridge) :D:eek::eek::D. I've never heard the wife laugh like that before :D....
It's okay though, onwards and upwards as they say in old black and white films...work has begun paper mache pot mark 2 :T. I think I'll use goggles this time, and stay at a safe distance; possibly even use long tongs to put the strips of paper on :D:rotfl::D.

    Kitchen Scales:
Ours 'packed up' a few weeks ago, and refused to let me fix them . Anyway, we held out -today I picked up a Salter set for 50p second hand :T. They didn't power on, so I thought I'd get them home and have a look. I got out the P****l**d batteries, stuck them in, and hey presto, they're fully working :j...The lovely wife priced them up using the power of the internet. They're approximately £16 new, couldn't believe it, £16 thrown away by someone for the sake of a battery. Nevermind one man's rubbish and all that....:D:rotfl::D

Clothes: I got myself a good spare fleece for this weather, only cost 50p too, just needed a good wash :p. It's Blue Harbour too (oooo, I hear you say :)).

Hope you've all had a good MSE day

***:whistle:scratches his head, I wonder if it's safe to start work on the paper mache pot again:think::whistle:***

I must be ultra tight then; I buy 10p Sainsburys basics shower gel, 20p shampoo, 8p nappy bags, £1.47 nappies...this time last year I was using only the best! Now I can see how much money I was throwing away. When I contemplated buying the shower gel I had the same thoughts your having now 'bet it dries your skin out' 'bet it smells yuk'...actually its fine! The OH even said I smell really nice!

I've taken inspiration for you, I'll be stragically placing [STRIKE]running him over[/STRIKE] under the car to sort out the grinding noise thats getting louder and louder...

  • Cheers for the tip on the sainsburys basics, I'm never sure as my skin dries out easy and it would be a waste.

Hello nat21luv...thanks for the tip on the 'basics' shower gel etc. To be honest I have been into Sainsburys before, but found a lot of the prices to be 'highish'. So didn't even bother looking for that sort of thing...I have used and still use supermarket/cheap alternatives to certain branded things....There are some things though, that I find I can't compromise fully on (everyone seems to have their own). I went for an uber cheap toilet roll once - I still get flashbacks, I can't even think about it ...so I go for 'middle' of the road price/ quality now on that :D. Tea bags too...me and an old house mate bought some 'no frills' style tea bags....Uuurrrggghhh, it tasted like the left over sweepings from the factory floor, the worst of it is, we had to drink it and make them, last the fortnight anyway, mmmmmmmmm :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:.
It would be interesting to see what other people can't fully compromise on...
I'm keeping my eye out for the gel though, once we start running down :D.

Sealed pot challenge: A lovely 60p for the pot tonight....plucked rescued from the loving wife's shrapnel section in the purse :D.
To answer your previous post Sue U-U, I got them all back alive and in one piece :rotfl:...That included the dog; who's stole my spot on the sofa  - he's moving soon, he just doesn't know it yet :D:rotfl::D.
The pot's coming along nicely, it's weirdly relaxing this paper mache malarkey :p...Got the first few layers on, and it seems to be going well, don't want to say too much as I may jinx it. Especially after the last little 'accident' **coughs***...best to forget about that and brush it under the carpet :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:.

Linux/DVD Machine: Extra memory is in, and all is fantastic...we even sat and watched the Octonauts on BBC iPlayer, for the big one (she was over the moon). Total cost for it worked out as £18. We can surf, watch BBC iPlayer, and watch DVDS with it. It couldn't have worked out better..I've started preferring Linux to Windows too :j.

Exercise: Needed to get 'back' into it, but didn't fancy trudging up to the leisure centre to be with wannabes, and posers...I know before anyone says it, there are nice friendly 'normal' people there too. But I found them to be outweighed by the others...no pun intended...:D I also get bored of sitting on bikes, and running on treadmills, my attention span won't allow for them :p...It's also the cost of membership, or the price for a session that puts me off :( . I had a kettlebell collecting dust, which I bought last year as I heard it was good for overall fitness. I've started up again with it, I can do it at home, I can do it in 15 mins if I fancy. No one has to see me sweating like a pig :o. No one has to hear me grunting :p, and no one has to hear me breathing like a bulldog on a jogging session :D:rotfl::rotfl::D. I've got no outlay, as it's already here. So I've used this instead (the Mse way choice). It seems to be working for me as I'm changing/varying sets and exercises, I've got to focus, and I've already lost 3lbs + this week just using this a few times a week!!!:D:p:D

Hope you've all had a good MSE week so far .

Ooh see again, I used to be an Andrex kinda girl but since moving to a house with 3 toilets and having 3 kids-the oldest is 39-I have swapped the aloe vera cushioned velvety softness for sand paper and my purse couldnt be happier! My bum(and other parts ;) ) has got used to it and the 39yr old tends to use the baby's baby wipes(these are 18p too and dont ask me why he uses them, he say's its his age?!!!) Uber scuba cheap me! I do have a 'fancy' roll that I put in the guests toilet for when they pop round...its quilted and everything! :rotfl:

How many toilets nat21uv? Three??? I'd kill for one more, nevermind three, and upstairs, oooo...I could sit for ages in there [STRIKE]hiding[/STRIKE] I mean reading the paper :rotfl:...

It's not the scratchy toilet rolls I bought, it was sort that disintegrated :D:eek:...not something I'd be keen on repeating; you had to double/treble it up - so it worked out as a false economy. That's why I go for the middle of the road toilet roll now! But Aloe Vera toilet sounds very special :D:rotfl::D. I don't know if I could take such elegance now :p:D:p.
I'm not 'hardcore' :A MSE/thrifty yet, but we are trying :A...

Sorry that cracked me up :D.

Anything you've bought nat that consider false economy, or that you can't sway/compromise to? For example toilet roll (mine for a reason), but others say: biscuits, tea, coffee etc.???
Anyone else have something to add too? I am genuinely curious...
