Hi N1: Love your thread and am subscribing.:j Electricity is a real challenge isn't it? We got one of the monitors last year from our electricity company and managed to reduce our yearly useage by 12% despite the snow and cold.:jAre you on Economy 7? We found some of the worst gobblers were kettle(I refuse not to have a cuppa), tumble dryer,tv/dvd/recorder and really shocking our spot lights!

    Good luck with this challenge.

    Really enjoying reading your thread.

I finally got the electricity thing up and running before xmas after it had sat in its box for a few months. I agree with robsmum the spotlights are terrible and having them in the kitchen and bathroom, they're the ones that get left on the most. Now I'm trying to train the kids but at the moment I'm following people round switching off lights :o

Thanks robsmum, and VJ2010. It seems to be the dryer taht's the main culprit with us, that's why I'm trying to make an effort not to use it as much:D. It's just a shame my two tomboys, attract muck and mud like their magnets...plus there's us two, so lots of clothes to wash and dry ....Nevermind, the clothes have to be washed, and I'm not willing to use a poss stick :rotfl:. So the washer's getting used :D, and the airers are now getting some serious use too .
I'm still trying to get the PC up and fully functional, with the help of a few people on the techie forum :T.
I wish I could find that video of the amateur dentist....still makes me whince thinking about it :D.

Hope you've all had a good MSE day .

NU1: Another tip I picked up on here somewhere was when washer has finished, give load an extra spin. Mine is 1600 spin and even on that it makes a difference to drying time, particularly with this poohy weather.

Right, I'll give you all a quick update of how things are going while I've got a chance :D...

Computer/DVD player: After saying, for 'gods sake', lots and lots - the Linux machine still won't put out any sound ...Nevermind, it looks like I'll be scavenging for a sound card somewhere, as its the onboard sound chip that seems to not want to play :rotfl:.

On a naughty note, I had a relapse today , bought a certain breakfast sandwich , it was only £3.05 ....Does it make it any more MSE, if I gave half to the wife before embarking on the jobs :rotfl:. We did share it, therefore making it 152.5p each...:D No, I didn't even convince myself, did I ...
I know I'm naughty and deserve a smack on the hand :p...I'll just have to find another way to save money now, as a penance :A.

Sealed Pot Challenge: It's going well; still debating which way I can decorate it, to make it a visual delight :rotfl:.

We've started to declutter, and are searching through the things we can sell. Just found out about the existence of Gumtree. Has anyone used it, if you have, what's your experience/opinion of it?

Hope your all having a good MSE day.

  • Glad to see things are still going well N1.

I know what you mean about the drier eating electricity. Mine stopped working in December. Immediate thought was  "help, I have 4 kids, I must buy a new one" I have held out though and really dont want another. Gotten used to drying the clothes on an airer, Just means I have to be organised. (Dizzy by name, dizzy by nature :))

Now to challenge me further the fridge has died . After rolling on the floor having a temper tamtrum, I picked myself up (did find 4p while down there :j) and went and got the camping fridge out of the garage. Now keep hoping one will come up on freecycle, we have the same gremlin here who just snaps everything up.

I'm sorry dizzy, the 4p comment cracked me up :rotfl:.
Do you think it's the same freecycle gremlin we've got? If it is, they cast a wide net. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that a fridge pops up for you soon :)......
Anyway, I'd better update you all on how we're doing:

    The Sealed Pot Challenge:
I've got an idea for the paper mache pot. I discussed with the lovely wife, she said, 'you can't', I said, 'I can...', she said, 'but that's really..'. See I've got you interested now :D. Ssssh, it's a secret , I shall unveil it when it's finished, it'll be like Christmas, only dafter :p. Don't worry it's not rude :rotfl:....

The Linux machine/DVD Player: I'm busy sourcing a part to fix it...It can do everything, just without sound, I suppose I should be thankful of small mercies :D.

Haircuts: We've obtained a hair trimmer for free, I've worked out that a barbers haircut costs £6.00 roughly. I usually get my hair cut every 3 weeks, it grows like I'm a Chia Head (popular novelty item :D, you know you've seen it). I've worked out (52 weeks/3 weeks)= 17.333333 * £6.00 = £104. That's just for me over the year...I wonder if I can get away with shaving the daughters and wifes head too mmmmmm...:rotfl:

Hope you've all had a good MSE day.

  • Fridges - failing all else, check ebay. I got a new one when we had our kitchen refurbed last year, and sold mine on ebay. I listed it for 99p thinking if i got anything it was a bonus - i just didn't want to send a working fridge to landfill or to the scrapman. It went for about £45, but there were loads on there some going cheaper.

I must be an absolute tightwad, as i am female and do cut my own hair. I was fed up of not getting what i wanted and being charged at least £30 for the privelege of sitting listening to inane chat for an hour. I then tried to go budget and have my sisters mate do it until they fell out. So, someone on the frugal living thread told me they did theirs and how they did it, and i gave it a go, and haven't looked back for about 18 months. DH does his and our 2 boys with the clippers. What i have found amazing is the skills like that you can pick up from watching clips on youtube. I have also taught myself how to knit from there, and knit presents like baby clothes and blankets now for when friends/relatives have babies. Free patterns were also online to choose from.
  • WHere do you get the free patterns ? WOuld love to know that.
