Finally found out why my cat has been so poorly - she's had an aggressive tumour in her tummy. There was nothing more they can do as they didn't want to operate on a 17-year-old so we've had to let her go this afternoon. I rather depleted my savings over the last month or so so the ISA has fallen below £5k and the semi-regular expenses fund is all but cleared out too so I'm starting again there and trying to get the ISA back to above £5k again.

Sorry to hear about your loss Dippykitty

I wanted to find somewhere to save 10% of my income that would be completely private and safe and offer a good rate of return.

So I have started buying Silver bullion and storing it securely.

The more I research why silver is such a good investment the more I want to buy before the price goes back up.

    Thanks for the messages!

I'll be back posting more regularly now as I'll be trying to replace what I took out of savings over the next few months (rather than just continuously taking out all the time like I was).

I'm hoping to have saved around 5k by the middle of next year. Nothing planned to be saving for as of yet, just for my future as I'm still young.

  • Hi all,

    Please may I join?

I am just starting to save towards a deposit for a house/flat, I am currently at university, just finished my 1st year so still have 2 or 3 years to save this deposit!

I also work 30hours per week.

I am hoping to save 15k

I have £700 in a rainy day fund, so starting from scratch for this 15k!!

What bank account do you all use for your savings?

    Welcome Fallen Angel.

I think most of us here use a combination of accounts. Whichever we can get the best deals on, and we keep our eyes open in case anything changes.

I keep my instant access savings in an A&L current account, as I opened it when you could get a rate of 6% on up to £2500 - believe this deal is still available but at a slightly lower rate. Also - get cash back via Quidco. I didn't get the cash back A&L were offering as I didn't want to transfer my current account to them - I don't trust them with my every day banking!

I've also got some ISAs, some are fixed rates where I have locked in previous year's subscriptions, and some are instant access and variable, which I'll move if the rates drop!

If you're hoping to set aside money monthly, it'll be worth looking into Regular Saver accounts, which often have decent rates in comparison to other accounts, but they often have penalties for withdrawals, and pretty much all have a limit to how much you can save in any given month, and you often can't skip months.

I like to use Money Facts to look at what's available on the savings front, and then to read the T&Cs in case they've put anything nasty in there (like withdrawal penalties, or limits, or having to have other products to qualify etc). Linky: http://moneyfacts.co.uk/compare/savings/accounts/best-sellers-savings/

    Good luck!
