I know what you mean about holidays, you've got to have a few luxuries! I think my weak point is socialising, if I had the money back for what I have spent socialising in the last 8 years I'd probably have enough for a 50% deposit!

Once I've paid off my debts I aim to save £700 a month, it'll be fairly tight but I'm paying that off easily each month in debts so shouldnt be too hard, I'm trying to reign in my bad habits now (ie inability to say no to a few glasses of vino at the local!) so that hopefully by the time I've paid my debt off I can pay more into savings.

Good luck and thanks for the tips

    Em

    You're doing great. :T

Re socialising, why not have more nights in with friends, house parties etc? DVD nights instead of the cinema (mind, even the cinema itself is a cheap night out as long as you don't go to the West End and you bring your own snacks!) etc etc.

Nothing here from me I'm afraid and there won't be for a while. I've actually had to borrow money from my boyfriend so I can get by and then pay my rent in 2 weeks :( ah well! I did just get a dooyoo cheque so that will help! It will just go straight on rent though!! :(

Hello! Can I join this thread? I'm new to MSE since the start of March but have been saving/budgeting for years. This has really given me the motivation to stop feeling hopeless about getting a house deposit together and start saving properly!

I work part-time and live with parents (niether through choice!) so can't save much more on living costs, and now I have a car on finance my regular monthly wages only just cover my living costs and general spending :(

But this has really motivated me to do extra work, I already do all the extra work I can get at my school but I find working at other schools through an agency scary and really stressful so it has been a real struggle to make myself do it.

However this has been a good month so far and I've already saved over my target although most of it will go to paying off my student overdraft, I'm in the process of switching to A&L and want my student account paid off and closed asap.

It's really inspiring to see how much everyone is saving and read all the tips, I keep adding up my totals but want to update my sig at the end of the month, even though it doesn't seem a lot compared to some it's loads more than I thought possible a few weeks ago!

    Good luck everybody!

Welcome aboard! My total isn't as massive as a lot of the other posters so don't worry on that front - at least you're moving forwards now!

Must remember at the end of the month to transfer my ISA to somewhere more accessible.

Think I may have to give in and set a new target, been avoiding it in the theory that my house will sell soon but that doesn't seem likely on current performance.

I have cut out going out on a weekday but it's still all too easy to spend £70 on a weekend night even without going to London

I could happily go out to the pub only once a month but I wouldnt get to see most of my friends- as a few of them have children the one night out for them a week is down at the pub (seemably we are a bunch of alchys!!)

Also, I love cooking and love dinner parties but I know I'd end up pushing out all the stops and spending even more! :p
