What's very sad is that if you have savings, you're in the minority and, if you tell people, they're surprised to find out you actually have money in the bank because it's more common not to have anything stashed away.

Let 'em carry on I reckon. When I was younger and had a lot less, I used to tell people when they asked. I remember when I was at university and had £6k saved and my friend was like "wow, you could buy a car!". Now I have over 10x that, I don't tell people the amount (unless it's a really close friend who I know won't judge). I just say that if I told them, they probably wouldn't believe me. Those I've told in the past have been envious, but they don't seem to understand that they can't have it both ways and p-ss all their money up the wall AND have savings...

Had to laugh a couple of years ago when I was talking to my auntie about my move... I think she was doing the typical British thing of knocking someone's dreams and going on about how hard and expensive it would be. When I said I had savings, she said "oh, a couple of grand doesn't last very long these days". The easiest thing to do was agree with her!

    Suze

I feel almost embarrassed to admit I have savings...

    Looks good, thanks.

For the old-school Office (and OpenOffice) users, you can convert Office 2007 documents using a Microsoft tool. You don't need Microsoft Office installed.

The OpenOffice web-site has more details (and solutions for Linux users).

Hey guys, would like to join you!

I'm 26 and just started my first full time job in February - after a couple University courses I finally left education last year! I'm currently on quite a low salary right now as I'm living in Central London and took a lower salary to have my accommodation provided, however financially I'm in quite a good position - due to family bereavement many years ago I inherited a house mortgage free, my Gran currently lives there since I moved to London.

I'm a recent convert. I was once the person with several store cards all of which would be maxed out, I would only ever pay the monthly minimum and gain more interest each month. Something finally clicked within me and one by one the cards where cut up and the debts paid off, it felt so good. Now I'm a person who can't help but buy the cheapest of things and rarely buy anything unless it's absolute necessary. It also means I appreciate any treats I buy myself much more.

Anyhow, it wasn't until last month that I was in a position to start saving as I wanted to pay various bills, buy my football season ticket for August and pay off my car insurance for the year, so that took quite a chunk out of my first few months wages. After reading through the forum I decided to open up a Kaupthing Edge account and put in what bit of savings I aleady had, and decided to start putting at least £500 a month into the account. I've just put another £500 in today from this months pay (it's pay day today!), and this takes my total savings to £3,000. As of yet I'm unsure what my aim is, I'd like to think that from now on I'd save £500 a month for the rest of my life, in ten years time it could turn into £60,000, that's very enticing!

Now I can't wait until next month so I can deposit another £500!

Yep! Has anyone else found if you ever tell anyone you have saving's they expect you to pay for everything and the excuse is " But you got more money than me " ... That really does P1ss me off!!. I don't mind treating people, but surley i shouldn't have to pay for others because I have saved my money and they just spend it!

I tend to pay for everything anyway. My friends are students. They don't expect it, but I often insist, with the promise of drinks and meals from them when they're all earning mega bucks!

It's my way of giving back what they give me in friendship and support. I'm no mug though - I wouldn't actually tell them about my savings, because it'd spoil my rose-tinted spectacles view of the world if it made them expect anything.

May's mass decorating binge is over and my savings is almost back on track. Have saved £2285 this month but not all has gone into the mortgage fund -

    £1000 towards my deposit
    £1185 towards my car
£100 in my DD reg saver

p.s I would never tell family & friends how much I had in savings because people can't help the green eyed monster rearing its ugly head. Sad but true. My 7yr old DD came home one day from the childminder's really upset, when I asked her why she said that she had told one of the other children there that she had £6000 in savings and that she was told it was impossible. The truth is and adult would not be any different if I had shared about my savings, because they can't/haven't/couldn't save as much, they would either disbelief, dismiss or treat you with contempt!
