Hi Gallygirl,
I've been a bit of a lurker on here for awhile but congrats about the move to the ME. Just on the discussion about tax while you are living there it's definitely worth getting some advice on this as it can be quite complicated. I know when I moved from Australia to the UK I was still considered a tax resident of Australia for awhile even though I was resident in the UK. A lot of it comes down to your intentions and if you are ever audited how you can prove those intentions so given you are planning on being there only a few years you may still be considered a tax resident in the UK.
It can be complicated and can be different depending on the country you are going to. I hope you can work it out. Even after 10 years in this country I'm still confused about how the tax system works here!Starting Mortgage Balance: £264,800 (8th Aug 2014)
Current Mortgage Balance: £269,750 (18th April 2016)0 -
GG, regarding your tax situation when you move to the ME, the following excerpt from the HMRC website might help:
You’ll be treated as non-resident from the day after you leave the UK if you can show:- you left the UK to go abroad permanently or your absence and full-time work abroad lasts at least the whole tax year
- your visits to the UK are less than 183 days in a tax year and average less than 91 days a tax year over a maximum of four consecutive years.
Mortgage: @ Feb. 2007: £133,200; Apr. 2011: £24,373; May 2011: £175,999; Jun 2013: ~£97K; Mar. 2014 £392,212.73; Dec. 2015: £327,051.77; Mar. 2016: ~£480K; Mar. 2017 £444,445.74

Thanks egoode & US. I will be treated as a non-resident - realistically it will as near as damn it be 15/16 by then. It's how long we stay out of the country that then becomes important but not much point worrying too much at the moment as the rules could easily change again (they'd been static for a while I think then changed a year or so ago so could easily have an amendment).
Where we're going is tax free which is a big attraction to working - in the unlikely event I have spare time after looking after Mr GG. Seriously, the plan at first is to get us temp accomm, get permanent accomm, get us settled in, find how the place 'works', what to do at the weekend, where to eat etc. Then I'll see what arises.

I have NOT seen a very suitable house. Yes I have

Bag of 'stuff' in bin 31/365.
[STRIKE]Mr GG sent to golf while EA here 32/365[/STRIKE]
Was going to close a bank account and count that as a victory but as I've opened a new one it's 'stuff' neutral.
EA been round to take photos while it still looks like a house with a 'room of doom' (not photographed!), before it becomes a 'house of doom'. Rental value in line with expectations and will put up next month if I ever find out when I am going :rotfl:.
Beautiful sunny day here and red kite circling overhead. Sort of like this :T but with bigger wings.
