The side lighters are quite nice KC - and did you see they can use low energy bulbs? - helps lower the impact on your electricity bill!! - the 'soft-tone' bulbs produce a nice ambiance, we have them in our uplighters.

thinking more seriously about composting, would it be practical?

gill - have you thought about a wormery? or a bokashi (sp?) - makes quicker work of the composting - try wiggly worms website for some examples

:hello: Happy New Year to you too! Glad you like the title :)

Had a good Christmas that was redeemed by my sister fetching me to her house again, for the New Year, I'm not *quite* ready to fly, but I'm getting there, slowly but surely. Thats the main New Year Resolution work at the moment, making sure that I don't get this ill again, and making the house a home so I can just *go* whenever I want.

    Good Morning KC!

    this atmospheric stuff :D

Forgot to mention that my atmospheric stuff keeps OH from noticing that I'm 'slightly' untidy. He's only just coming to terms with the fact that a house is for living in - rofl - his ex is a bit of a neat freak bordering on manic disorder - he lived in a showroom for 20ish years - rofl

Great tip with the eggshells - will give that a try - have you ever dried out the tea/coffee grounds as well? - My Mom swears they are the best ever fertilizer but I'm not fond of the smell while they dry out 'au natural'.

So glad to hear you enjoyed your meal with family & have a plan to settle into your new digs! Two of your goals really seem to be taking shape.:D Yeah to socialising & nesting!

Morning RT! There are uses for this atmospheric stuff after all then :rotfl: Nobody could ever accuse me of being a neat freak, thats for sure :D at the moment ... no, I'm not going to list it, why focus on stuff I don't like? The house is still a w.i.p., and thats all I'll say about that :j

As for the tea and the coffee grounds, I've let them dry out involuntarily, so to speak - in the other house, it was a climb of 30 steps or so to the compost bin, and I'd often take them up there once a week or so, so the top stuff dried out and the interior of the little pile that had collected got a bit mouldy :o thats the sort of reason I'm so happy to have a flattish garden :j I've never noticed the smell - my sense of smell has been ruined by growing up in Liverpool when the worst of the air pollution was still a fact of life.

I just tried on the 3 dresses I bought online from JL - thank heavens it was JL, that can be trusted to take returns, not a scammer .... the one is nice but really boring, and the other two, which are the same in different sizes - the material is beautiful, but the dress hangs like a sack  its awful. Even if I took a size smaller again (ridiculous to think that I might be a size 10!!!) I don't think it would look any good. So back they *all* go. I might have a hunt around the one posh charity shop locally.

Bokashi is meant to be brilliant - we looked into it but it was quite expensive to get all the stuff. Less if you can put together a suitable container yourself, rather than buying one of the ready-made ones. The bran mixture itself isn't too bad once you've got something to put it in.

We tried a small compost bin in the garden but it went mouldy and slimey - not very nice at all!

Yep, I don't think small does it for compost - you might be out of luck there, gill.

Hi Pippi - when you've had your brekkie, could you tell me what you think about ivy? Does it work going into a compost bin, or do the suckers grow into roots and ruin everything?

Ooh, I just found the answer on recycle now:

    http://www.recyclenow.com/home_composting/making_compost/can_i_compost_it.html

Basically, compost the leaves but not the stems. B&ggr, that creates *more* work, not less!
