Errrm, what's this dry cleaning malarkey? If it says dry clean, I interpret that as meaning 'don't get it too wet'. But then again my housework does tend to the 'sluttish'

Double glazing is on my list, my windows are rotten, but I detest white uPVC; I have a hankering for the days when you'd say to someone ' mines the house with the red front door, and the blue paintwork on the windows and the yellow guttering' now all houses look the same.

I forgot you were going to Grand Designs, hope you got some good ideas.

KC - looks like you have the digging all sorted & yes it is exhausting at first. I full recommend doing it after some serious rain - much easier that when hard ... although if your soil is of a clay persuasion, that might not help.

As to extra soil, I've always fancied making one of those grass armchairs :)

    Hi KC and all

I think there are probably different methods here... one of my friends just digs everything over and leaves it, he found my insistence on pulling out all the roots etc hilarious. But I think if I take out all the weed roots when I first dig, it will be clear for longer. Otherwise the bits of couch grass etc root will just spread.

I love the grass armchair but landlord probably thinks I'm mad enough already :rotfl:

If i have to dry clean anything i use vouchers from tesco- which can be converted to Johnsons the cleaners

Ooh thanks Bob, I already have the Johnson's priority club thing as it was such a good deal - now will pay for it by Tesco too. I only really use them for stuff that can't cope with washing - tweed winter coats, leather jacket, duvets, linen suit (won't be buying one of those again lol).

    Hi KC and all

linen suit (won't be buying one of those again lol).

I've got quite a few linen tops, and had linen skirts and dresses in the past. I always hand wash, drip dry on a hanger and always iron before it gets dry. If it dries you've no chance of getting the creases out.

KC - In general with dry cleaning, I work out the cost versus the risk i.e. how much would it cost to replace and is it going past it best so of less value to me etc.. So some things I'd initially dry clean, but later on move to hand washing. If I've only worn something for a few hours in an evening for example, it gets put on an hanger and left to air for at least a day before putting away, this gets another wear at least out of it, this cuts down on the washing/dry cleaning in general.

If you do the airing trick, it's worth sticking to the same perfume each time, as the fabrics do tend to absorb the perfume too, and it could clash if you switch. This is especially true of wool fabrics etc..

Morning all! I'm quite confused about the dry cleaning thing. This was my first ever silk dress - the one I bought in the Hobbs winter sale for £44, with an original price tag of £159. And it was the first time I'd worn it. Plus I wore it for 12 hours on a hot day! So simply airing it isn't going to do it, I don't think. I don't have a tumble dryer, so can't do the sheets thing ... I'm certainly sluttish on cleaning, but if I'm upgrading my life, which is what I want to do, then one thing thats really important to me is maintenance - of my clothes, my self, my house, my garden. Looking after things. And as I have fewer *things*, from all the decluttering, that becomes more and more important.

But I do appreciate the feedback, and the lovely conversation :):):) and its given me some good ideas for how other people *do* look after their stuff, its simply never been important to me. I like the idea of sensitive handwashing, and cost-risk, and airing too, if the event hasn't been very long. Fortunately, with this dress, there's no need to iron - although its silk, its a sort of rough finish, oddly enough. Suits me down to the ground :D:D:D

Rosa, I'm with you on taking out roots - it just seems to make sense, doesn't it! I'm off to the double glazing showroom today, so that the scary front door will soon be my *ex* front door, and if things go as expected, I'll sign up for it, but hopefully I'll get back in time to do a little bit of weed pulling - its rained overnight, so the ground will have gone soft.

Grand Designs was great - there were lots of stands selling stuff on the day, including a *thingy* that vibrated your arthritis joints to dissolve uric acid. Only £300 instead of £800! I let them experiment on my finger, but I wouldn't let them touch my shoulder, thank heavens. The aftermath hurt, but the knuckle joint thats been really really badly swollen went down quite a bit in the 24 hours after the event. I'm going to be doing some research online....

    More later!

Well first of all - do you have gout anyway? Uric acid is gout.

Absolutely! You have to do your own research on this. I was quite doubtful, but my knuckle *has* gone down, very quickly. They said it was used by the Nuffield hospital, and since my consultant *is* a rheumatologist at the local Nuffield, its easy enough to check, even though I'm NHS.

I know it seems a bit of a jump, but try reading the second bit of http://tenniselbow.gg/tennis-elbow-treatment/

Is it oesteo, or rhumatoid you've got?
