Hey all :) Need some advice on do's and dont's.
I have a Mustang for the day, so the plan will be to:
Leave hotel at 9am, drive the Interstates to get to Hoover Dam....
Now looking on Google maps, you got the bypass bridge main interstate, and then a road leading upto the Dam itself.....

Is it a case of coming off the Interstate, heading towards the Dam, finding a car park, then doing a walk to get to the Dam.... Am only gonna take some snaps when on it anyway, then back to the car.....

Now looking on google, it looks as though the West Rim and Lake Mead tourist spots are kinda next to each other? Do i come off the interstate and follow 'tourist' signs, etc etc ?
It would be nice to see a bit of the West Rim, but i am sure i read somewhere that its a Private road and hire cars arn't allowed up this way??

Just wanna make use of the full tank of fuel, and as we dont have to be back at the airport until 20:30 , wanna make use of the day, even if it means finding a spot near a lake, parking up and then lying out in the sun for a bit, or walkin around and so on!
    Pointers plz! :):)

You can go over the now open bridge or over the dam. I intend to do over dam on way and bridge on way back as was not open last time I went.

I dont know of any way to get to the west rim without entering the reservation where you then have to pay to go onto a coach to go to rim ,but to me was well worth the $30.

I used 3/4 of a tank in a 8 seater people carrier to get to dam and back, we got back by 5 so went up to the mall north of the strip before dropping it back off at the airport.
I found the food on the way to the canyon and at the canyon really bad, but stupidly we took nothing with us so make sure you get a good breakfast or stop at boulder city

it's not that hire cars aren't allowed up that way (they are if you pay)...just that hire car insurance won't cover damage caused by taking the car off-road...and at least part of the road is unpaved...so if there's any damage to the car, the insurance waivers you will have may not cover it.

Suggestion - from the dam head back towards Vegas and then turn onto Lakeshore Road (follows Lake mead around LV bay). At the junction with Northshore Road, turn right and keep on this road until you reach the Valley of fire. Drive through VoF (stopping if you have time) and then back to Vegas on the interstate/highway ...whatever that main road is!

Like the sound of that :) Valley of fire here we come!
..... on a romantic note, would be nice to find somewhere next to the lake to park up and chill out as such :):)
Ok, forget the west rim, hoover dam and the Valley sounds a plan.... As i got the car for 1 day only, i dont mind taking that extra insurance out to cover the car for going off road, although i would'nt drive like a plum which would result in damage anyway :)
Time to look at that map again!

oh, and the hoover dam, i was under the impression it will take about 45 mins to get to ? (i know theres speed limits, but......... ;) )

    Wdyw - THANK U !!!! :):)
Thats done exactly what i want!
Plan now is to head North of Vegas, on the I-15, then turn into the 'Valley of Fire Highway' , maybe find some places to stop, etc, but am happy just driving that road (love driving!)....
Will stop at Lake Mead somewhere to chill out as such, then head down Northshore Road, and then down Boxcar Cove Road, park by the water and go for a stroll, etc (looks a bit touristy as such).....
Then back onto the road with the roof down, heading for the Dam, then back to the airport for 8pm :)
Should make for a sweet day, i reckon a tank and half should get me around 450 miles in the Mustang ? :)

I don't think you can take out additional insurance to cover it - not on a standard rental...I think that technically you'd be breaking the terms of the agreement driving that road in the first place...people do it though - all the time...but the road is meant to be evil...11 or 14 miles of evil potholled goodness.

Decided to do some shopping on our 2nd day. Very unsuccessful..... Went to the premium outlets north but nothing seemed to grab us as either good value or something that we really wanted so bought nothing. We also popped into the fashion show mall but only to the apple store and also to purchase some tickets for the rat pack show at the plaza for weds night.!

Enjoyed a few bevvies in the Orleans while I watched the basketball and the OH played on the iPad :) drink prices seem very reasonable in here. $8.75 for a bud light and Malibu and coke. Would have been $2 less if I'd have noticed the deal of coors light for $2. Really fancied a Chinese curry so we ate in the Chinese at the Orleans. Very enjoyable :)!

Before bed we played some slots.....still not a huge fan. Personally I feel like I need some input rather that just pressing 1 button. Star wars game seemed cool when you got the bonus. Off to bed feeling a little tipsy :)

On the weds decided to do the buffet at the Orleans as we knew we'd be around all day so we did the breakfast, lunch & dinner package. $52 for the 2 of us. Amazing but man I was stuffed lol. Drove out to the Hoover dam which was nice....not far out from Vegas and very cool. Went back via the hard rock hotel as we knew there was a shop in there we liked. Cool hotel, found a top each in the shop and chatted to the assistant for a good while. Very friendly. Headed back to the Orleans for lunch then out to the pool. Was so hot yesterday.....first time we've had to just sit and relax in the sun. After dinner we went downtown to the plaza to watch the Ratpack is back show. We absolutely loved it!! Great fun. Had every intention of going to the strip but just felt shattered so chilled at the Orleans then went to bed.!

Loving Vegas so far....so much to do...almost 2 much. By 12 we are shattered lol......hardly party animals but we are enjoying ourselves.!

Car hire help needed please guys!

We have a booking with Carhire3000 for July (using Dollar), and upon earlier advice have now registered with Dollar Express - membership number has come through and OH has emailed Carhire3000 to have this added to our booking. Is there anything else we need to do??

Trying to save a bit of time upon arrival as we have quite a bit to be getting on with so any time we can save is a bonus.
