i really must write a set of driving tips in the guide, as i have posted this reply a few times now ..

anyhow main things to remember , you can turn right on a red traffic light if it is clear and safe to do so , and there is no sign telling you cannot ( rare sign but they do have them in Vegas)

also don't forget you can undertake on the freeways ect . and don't break the speed limit less you want a hefty fine .

At least you won't have to write about roundabouts. Although the thing that I struggled with was U-turns and worst of all u-turns at traffic lights.

I undertake on the motorways here and dual-carriageways..
    Why ?
Cos am guessing half of america lives over with the amount of idiots who sit in the 2nd or 3rd lane on the motorways when the 1st lane is perfectly clear!

As to braking the speed limit in Nevada, whats the deal with those long roads that just seem to head off into the mountains ? with nothing around but land, is that the kind of place cops hide out as such to catch wanna-be speedsters ? (say i take a drive to Lake Mead, thats got a longish straight road i believe ?) :)

Whilst there are no speed cameras in Nevada, old smokey does speed checks by aircraft, no they don't swoop or parachute down and slap you with a ticket. They have cars posistioned to intercept you further down the road (sometimes way further down the road).

It is very unusual to be let off with a warning for speeding, it is a major source of PD revenue and the boys want to be paid. They don't hide the fact like over here, it is a revenue generator.

Quick couple of questions (on behalf of DH)
He can't remember the speed limit on the freeway - what is it please?
And someone once said to him that it is a felony to overtake a school bus in a residental area when the lights are flashing. I'm assuming it's a no-no but a bit confused on that one - can someone clear that up for us?

At least you won't have to write about roundabouts.

Why not? There are roundabouts in Summerlin and up the road towards Zion NP at Mesquite. Not that common out west (especailly compared to New England rotarys) but they are out there. Any driving guide would have to make it clear that there are exceptions to the rules. NYC for example treats turning on red the opposite to all 50 states. It's banned completely there unless there is a sign to say it is ok

The law changes from state to state but the general rule of thumb is you stop both ways if you come across one that is stopped and has its lights flashing.

speed linits? - just read the signs!

    :rotfl:

The freeway speed limit may vary between 60 and 75 depending where in the state you are so you need to keep vigilant.
  • I drove 5,000 miles in the USA this Summer, I'm a professional :D
I drove over the limit a lot of the time and never got stopped. You just gotta use your judgement as to where and when, and don't go more then 5-10 over the limit.

driving to grand canyon, the roads are straight with no where for police to hide, but rumours of police helicopters tracking your speed from above.

  • Hi everyone.

Has anyone got any adventure sports they can recommend in Las Vegas or the Nevada area? (bungee, sky diving or even something I've never heard of).
