  • Passed again at the Leeds council test centre.

My car is now 9 years old - just got one advisory.

Excellent friendly staff. I will be going there again...
I didn't study anything at school. They studied me.

Do the council MOT centres, MOT motorbikes ?

I saw the list of Testers at the Leeds test station and the lowest class mentioned was IV, ie cars. I think motorbikes are classes I and II so testing for them is not available sorry.

I presume other council places are similar - most councils don't have motorbikes in their own fleet. Obviously the police do, but I imagine they have separate MoT arrangements.

  • Took our P reg camper into council run MOT place yesterday same as last year and she passed with flying colours, one advisory that my hubby knew about. cost £37.50. The lads are very helpful and knowledgeable. There was a question on here once asking if they do motorbikes well ours do, Thanks again Martin. :j
  • I live in the Conwy Council area - not sure if Conwy have this facility for MOT testing for private vehicles but I now always go to the neighbouring Council at Denbigh. Their depot address is
    Maintenance Expresssway Business Park,
    Abergele Road,
    BODELWYDDAN LL18 5SQ
Telephone 01745 839230. They are a smashing groups of blokes, very obliging and very friendly. As a female who has been driving an old, but very faithful vehicle for the last few years I have never felt intimidated. Sure they have failed it a couple of times but only on very minor problems and I have never had to fork out for huge repairs costs unlike local standard garages. I can definately recommend to anyone to take their vehicle to their local Council Depot for a a MOT test - do it now - do NOT hesitate! :money:

Just used Cefni Garage in Llangefni, Anglesey, for our 1974 Daf and seriously impressed. They do repairs but the owner is helpful, seems honest, and actually interested in cars rather than just making money (seems to be a rarity amongst mechanics nowadays!)

The result was a pass with 3 advisories, one of which I'd exected a fail on (I do my own repairs but hadn't had time to sort everything thanks to various "real life" distractions in the past month).

It's not often I'd go out of my way to recommend a garage, but these guys have genuinely impressed :)

For anyone in this area, their address is:

    Unit 1 Llwyn Ednyfed,
    Llangefni,
    Anglesey,
    LL77 7SE

I had a voucher from Kwik-fit for a discounted MOT which I used, the car passed but I was told the tester advised the front tyres were on the legal limit and should arrange to have them replaced.I had the car serviced at the dealership a week before and they put in their report that the front tyres had 4mm tread, the car had covered 30 miles before the MOT,I informed the guy at the desk of this and he said he could not comment on the dealers report. The Council run test centres
sound a good idea reading other posts.

Yet again, while you are trying to money save by getting your cars tested at council MOT centres, just remember these guys do not see a variety of cars, are not constantly updated with TSBs, cannot hack it in a real garage (i.e., are good and earn money from their skills, knowledge and experience) but hide away as local authority workers, I shudder to think about the rubbish they pass as MOTable.
They really should stick to putting council vehicles through their nelsonesce tests.
MOTs are easy to pass by vehicles in sound condition. This is the last place you want to, "save" money.
  • After reading reviews of Kwik fit and other garages, was scared to be cheated and came against the idea of council runned mot centres, they may sound expensive but keeps the mind at peace as no fear of being taken for a ride just to barge in more money.
  • Used this for first time this week.
Very impressed. Efficient, professional, immaculately clean (both waiting room (with drinks machine) and test bay!).
    Highly recommended.
    Mike.

    Totally agree.

If there is an item on the car that is in a condition that is borderline or debatable whether it is a pass or fail then surely you'd want to get it fixed.

I can only recall 2 MOT failures I've had in the last 10 years or so, one was a bulb that was checked previous day and other was for top mount. Both were good reasons to fail.

My car passed yesterday at a local tyre centre, cost £35 and no advisories. Car is 12 years old with 246,000 miles yet is regularly serviced and maintained as required. I do wonder whether some failures are purely due to a lack of maintenance.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
