Believe me VOSA are specific in their testing criteria, and independent garages do not fail cars for any other reason than they do not meet the VOSA stipulated criteria.

Take your car to one garage for its MOT, then take it to another and watch it fail on COMPLETELY different items if you want proof that the above statement is wrong.
You must make a minimal profit on a £50 MOT. Besides if/when work needs doing, who do you think we take our vehicles to?
Council test centres are a viable alternative for those who are also 'struggling' (and believe me, we do), with a 100% guarantee that no extra work will be found purely to bump up someone's profit.
I don't take my car to a council test centre because I have a good, local independent garage. However a quick glance down this page shows others for whom its been an ideal choice after previously being ripped off.0 -
As I said there will always be dubious characters in any industry, just don't tar every garage with this reputation which is what seems to happen in this industry.
Glad to hear you have a dependable local garage.0 -
did anyone find one in Norfolk? The council must have one, but can't find hide nor hair of it.
Also has anyone used the one in Halesworth? Any good?
(No luck searching the thread btw before I get flamed)
Cheers :money:0 -

I think a quick read through this thread: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1787693
will confirm that only the insane, naive and masochistic take their vehicles to an organisation that pays their staff commission to rip off customers. Make sure you read post #5, that's my favourite0 -
Use Tesco Vouchers at Nationwide Auto -£13.00. Unbeatable0

Hi,
I live in Perth, Scotland. Hubby and myself have MOT's coming up soon and want to save money. Is there a Council MOT test centre in Perth or close. If not can anyone recommend a really good place to go for an MOT?
Thanks a lot.0
