Dear all,
I today received my weekly news letter form MSE and saw the MOT section. To which caught my attention, I MYSELF am an MOT TESTER, and I work for an INDEPENDENT garage NOT a council authority. and I would like to comment that we are a very large garage operating 3 testing lanes and we DO NOT go out to fail cars intensionlly like many cheap mot centers. although we charge the retail set price of £54.85 for a car we offer a free retest with in 10 days even if the work is not carried out by us. UNLIKE many cheap places who offer mots at a discount rate, these such places will do the initial test £30 then demand the other half fee of £25 if it is retested if they have not done the work! These are the type of places you must watch to include a few kwikfit setyres nationwide auto centers. they are chain garages which run on targets for profit which they must meet every day. hence you get an mot which could cost you a fortune.
It is a good idea to pre check your car as suggested in the article on the main site, remember your number plate lights! also to add to the article you must understand there is a lot more goes into an mot than is initially suggested that you can not check your self with out mechanical knowledge or assistance.
other top tips, please bring along your old mot if you can find it as it make our job that little bit easier, and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BE ON TIME IF NOT 10 MINUTES EARLY, for your appointment. we do not have all day to wait for you. much like a dentist you have a booked appointment please be there on time!

There's another kind of reliable MOT center apart from the council depots. Certain Technical colleges run training courses for auto mechanics. Most have garage workshops, for training students - Some of these have found it desirable to have their own MOT test centre. These MUST by law be open to the public, like the council depots. The one near me in does very few MOT tests each day, (throughput is not their raison d'etre) BUT like the council depots, they have no wish to earn from repairs, (they might even not undertake to do the required repairs). They want to teach correct standards, they do not interpret the regulations in a "profitable" way!0

I had a friend suggest Council MOTs before and found my nearest one through MSE - just want to make a note of thanks for this! My MOT last year cost about £700 and had a list of faults as long as my arm! (I didn't think there was much wrong at all). This year I have only 1 fault and have saved 2 weeks wages on what the difference in repair costs! huge difference...
I personally think I was fleeced last year - I was given a recommendation to get a new latch cable for £67, but another guy just adjusted it while he was in there and the council put a bit of elbow grease on it and said there was absolutely nothing wrong with it! (I'm now avoiding Hardy's)0 -
Council run MOT test centres may not have a vested interest in doing repairs but they do tend to be stricter especially with rusty areas. My van had an abandonded test due to 2 faults and rust. Retested at another MOT station and I was told that the rust was not within the prescribed area and only one of the other faults was mentioned.0

Council MOT Stations mainly service/MOT public transport and taxis as I'm sure you are all aware so they are more safety conscious hence why they may fail/give you an advisory for something a 'normal' garage wouldn't!English by birth. GEORDIE by the grace of God.0

I visited the aforementioned MOT centre today having read the MSE article on council run test centres.
The facilities are execellent as is the customer service.
My vehicle was tested by Colin, who was both highly professional and equally entertaining.
I was particularly impressed with his willingness to go that extra yard and he also imparted some invalubable advice on how to keep my vehicle in tip top condition.
This is my first visit to such a workshop having previously always used private MOT centres but I will definately be using council run MOT centres from now on.0 -
Just booked me Honda in for an MOT with https://www.nsn.co.uk (National Service Network). You ought to be able to get a 20% discount by using promotional code 'NEWSLETTER'. Cost £43.88 and includes free pick-up and return and maybe even a quick wash!If you just don't cut the mustard, try a spoon.
And if you don't want spam in your Inbox, I believe tuna is more palatable :-)0 -
We are an MOT garage near Norwich City Centre that only do MOT's. We don't offer cut price MOT's as we provide a professional reliable service, although we offer a discount from the set price at £49.95.
Family run with a superb reputation locally.
