    7. see 6 - curb expensive coffee shop habit to save money and weight. this will be a v difficult one to crack, its my only real indulgence. *snip

Hi savingqueen, in which case if this is your only indulgence then I'd suggest you use this as your reward. Eg make your own bread for a week = one visit for a coffee shop coffee. Make your own bread for a week and sell x number of items on ebay = one coffee shop coffee and a slice of cake/muffin/whatever.

I cut down on going to the Tea and Coffee House, to the extent that I eventually stopped going just because I couldn't then abide paying the price :rotfl:. A win win situation.

*snip This has been a lovely thread to read, its inspired me to think about my own ideas for 2011

I totally agree, it's great seeing other peoples ideas.

3-This is the year im going to learn myslef to sew, ive been given a machine by mil. My goal last year was to learn myself to crochet and i love love love it x

I can already sew, and have done some basic dressmaking in the past, this year I want to learn to crochet so that I can re-vamp a beret with flowers ( for next winter ).

6-Start Xmas shopping even earlier this year, and only buy useful pressies, no gift sets or tat, already started saving my tesco saving stamps as bil and 2 nephews are all getting a bottle of Jack Daniels.

Totally agree with this too, if in doubt give something that can be eaten or drank, and if in further doubt give a voucher/gift card, and if in further doubt give money. At least you've thought about it and it's the thought that counts:rotfl:

    Here's to a productive 2011.

thanks Kerfuffle, good idea to use as a reward (works with the kids!)
:D I asked DH for a coffee shop gift card for Xmas as I couldn't think of anything I wanted for £10 (our max limit for each other). I dutifully spent £9 (though in sales) and he spent £30 on me. I had a coffee and cake over Xmas week, my reward for braving sales and getting bargains, still have £25.80 left, plan to use only as a reward or when meet up with my friend who has same habit as me!

p-pincher, we started giving our 2 DSs £1 pocket money a week last year which seemed a lot at the time at 4 & 6. However it means they have to buy their own "Saturday sweets" out of it which they often don't now want to buy them and have instead saved up separately or together for a toy. Oldest DS even saved £4 to buy his little brother a birthday present. He is also very aware of the cost of things and how they can't have everything they want and how they are lucky to even have pocket money compared to 3rd world children. Both decided to give their pocket money due on Xmas Day to local charities. Haven't got them to save in savings accounts yet though, that will be next step. Good luck

7-Start giving my 2 dd's regular pocket money (£1 a week from both me and dh) so they can start learninng the value of money and saving

The CD's cost 50p a week (I think), and a week's listening is long enough to get bored of it, then if I want it, I will go and buy it! (How many CD's have you bought because you like the track that is playing on the radio, only to find out that the rest of the album is rubbish??)

    An excellent point!:T

    • Make sure nobody wastes electricity - everybody in the house is capable of turning off the switches, not just me. I'm making a chart to show the power used, as evidence!
    • carry on with the Toiletries challenge - very liberating!
    • even though we've only got a backyard I'm sure we can grow more to eat than we do.
    • continue with my 'Christmas & birthday' campaign - buying in advance has made huge savings and is now embedded into out January shopping.
    • make even more use of the clothes in my wardrobe :o
    • try to get to the main library more often: the local library closed suddenly & the main one is a huge pain to get to on foot or by public transport :(
I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.

Mine all seem to have a bit of a theme:

    1) Use up all the wool/craft stuff I have before buying anything else.

    2) Read all the books I have in the house before buying any others and also use the library more.

    3) Use up all the toiletries stash I have before buying any more.

    4) Stick to my weekly budget come hell or high water!

    5) I am determined that no matter how rubbish a day I'm having I will find a "pollyanna moment" to make me smile.
Never look down on anybody unless you are helping them up.

you can read most magazines online, i'd buy a book for the train (or sign up for the free radox ones) i never by magazines anymore and i read mil paper :p

my resolution is to spend less on things we don't need (this past week has shown how much we waste as were now £800 worse off than we were on xmas day and our bank looks very sad :( )

hi,could you tell me more about how you can read mags on internet and the radox books please? i'm a sucker for mags/books!!:j
  • I just googled radox free books and lo and behold it came up. I have ordered my first free book. Do the same for magazines, just type the name of the magazine you are interested in and it should direct you to the online one. I have also decided to read blogs instead of magazines, far more interesting, friendly and no adverts
  • This year I will:

Read all my unread books before buying more
Watch all my unwatched DVDs before buying more
Use toiletries, nail varnish, makeup etc before buying more (sensing a theme here...)
Not buy clothes until I reach my target weight - I have plenty in varying sizes from while I was putting weight on!
I already cook from scratch but I will do more batch cooking
Save up my vouchers from surveys for Christmas presents (instead of buying more books and DVDs!)
Cut down on Diet Coke. This is the big one for me, I've been drinking it as my main drink for years, it must cost me a fortune! Fruit tea, water and cheap lemonade with maybe a can of Diet Coke a week as a treat (hopefully I will find I grow to dislike it!)
