Some people are more susceptible to marketing than others, and different social stratas have different items sold to them s luxuries/essentials.
I think it's important to try and avoid this kind of judgement against "chavs" or the poor and ignorant or the people who buy things that aren't marketed at "us". It just feels a bit distasteful, especially on a generally nice board like this one. Trainers/designer garb is just spending money on feeling ok, fitting in or being confident. Don't we all spend our money on similar things in one way or another? Especially the opportunity to give those feelings to our families.
To me, your statement: "Don't we all spend our money on similar things" is important - with "OUR" being the key word.
I think where it starts to bite is when the people spending £100 on a pair of trainers aren't even bothering to try and work for it and are living off state handouts. Handouts that I personally don't think should be used for such luxuries. They have houses provided, money for food, booze and fags provided, and then enough left over to squander on luxury goods such as branded trainers, high end mobile phones, etc...
Is that what taxes should be spent on? Personally I don't think so - it encourages (some) people to be reckless with their life choices such as breeding as they see it as a way to get a bigger house provided to them and more benefits - I've been walking behind two young Mum's both pushing their double-buggies down the street, talking about how they can't wait to have another baby so that they can be moved into a four bedroom house! Yeah great - I'm having to fund your house whilst struggling to try and save a £20K deposit to have any hope of moving into a house of my own! Remind me - why do I work again?
I KNOW that this is not the case for all on benefits - there are a large number who want to be working and earning their money.
BUT, there is a large element of this going on - there's enough stories in the papers and on the news about it and I am sure that we all know of areas where this type of "lifestyle" seems to be prevalent.
Right - rant over - time for some sleep...My posts are my own opinions based on my experiences and info gathered from sites such as this.

JSA?
The adult's version of EMA, I'm sure we all have 'that friend' who treats it as pocket money and never saves anything.
Imagine if you will, two 40 year old single men made redundant.
Person 1 saved a few grand a year, possibly for a deposit, could be to protect against the scenario he's found himself in. Sorry, you're above the threshold, do not pass GO, do not collect.
Person 2 has no savings, but does have a shiny car, new iphone, !!!!ed away his money on gadgets. Here you go, £65 a week.
In what world does that make sense?
And if you're not a dullard with 1 GCSE and no ambition, then you're probably good for the govt. to pick up as a temp in the public sector. Instead of being paid to sit about at home.Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”
Said Diogenes, “Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king.”0 -
Sorry, but it doesnt mater how 'on my !!!!' I am, I wouldnt take something off my child to sell or pawn to pay bills or do 'householdy things'. My ex's mam gets my son something good (expensive) for birthday/Christmas, but thats a present for him, nothing to do with me.0

What does a child NEED an Iphone for?0

I was using that as an example........****rolls eyes****
The point I am trying to make is that I would never use my childs possession to pay for something that is my responsibility.0 -
Why is it everyone bashes the unemployed?. Yes, I'm an unemployed person, not through choice though. Yes, I have an HDTV, smartphone, laptop, netbook * desktop PC, but I use my smartphone as a tool to organise my jobhunting. I can add interview details into the calender, link the address into google maps and use the voice navigation app to turn said google maps into a satnav to get me to my interviews. By trading my old telly in for a new one, I am saving £10 a month on my electricity bill.
The rest of the tech was obtained whilst in employment.
In my town, the local rag ran a frontpage article stating that there were 3,200 on the dole and 1500 jobs on the jobcentre database. What they failed to mention was that 1450 of them are either part-time or nmw. None of which are able to support me and my family. My response will be to go self-employed once my cataracts have been done.Never Knowingly Understood.

That is what annoys people, you seem to have chosen to not even apply for low paid work but are happy to take money from the taxpayer.0 -
