It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

They'll probably have to sell the daughter, and her iPhone, into slavery to pay off the loan. :rotfl:0 -
You do wonder if there is some truth to the theory that quite a few people who are "poor" do actually choose it as a lifestyle, if not entirely conciously.0

You see it quite often sadly, chavvy looking people who have all the latest gear clothes wise and gadget wise.
I've a mate whos missus doesn't work, he works on jobs here and there and gets about £500 a month and yet they have a Wii, 32" HDTV, a PC, a netbook and a touchscreen mobile phone each. It's no wonder why people stay on the dole.0 -
From my experience, if you pop into your local jobcentre, you will find that a fair proportion of the clients are sporting very high end phones. Seems a very odd priority to me.0

When you see things like that it makes me always sceptical about people who come on the forums and say they are completely broke and need a loan.
I can just imagine many of them having a PC, mobile phone, HD TV, a subscrition to Sky, a gaming console at the least.
I mean most of them have a PC/Laptop and Internet connection to even post with.0 -
i am on a state pension and pension credit ONLY> yes, i am always skint and behind with my bills. BUT i have these things you mention - not new i have to add - but i couldnt be in touch with my family with these things. and its all cost me nothing. my computer screen, nice new flat screen was given to me by my son; not new but still very serviceable. the tower with all the workings in was given to me by a very good friend, and i have had it only a month or so. before that i didnt have a computer at all. i used my daughters when i stayed with her. my phone is an old one of my sons, and just a bog standard mobile. my tv came from my son also; he works in removals and teh person he was moving didnt want it any more and asked him if he did, so he got it for me; again not a new one, but a great tv none the less.
so yes, i have all these things, but my nearest and dearest are recycling everything in my direction and its money saving at its best.
a christmas present this year is a sewing machine. 2nd hand and quite old, but who cares??? its brilliant. and i wouldnt have it any other way.
and i have to say that like you, i would love to know how they get the money for all that stuff. maybe they just dont eat properly or something.0 -

Possiby my point is though, that many of these are luxuries and not essentials and could be sold if money is needed.
Stuff like TV's can even be picked up for free or very little money, so sell the HDTV and get a free/inexpensive one.
I'm not saying everyone who comes here pleading poverty etc, isn't posting the truth and indeed has nothing worth selling, but I'll wager many have at least a few non essential items that could be sold to help them through.
The jobcentre/moneyshop posts, my own mate and my eyes when out and about in general, tell me that far too many are claiming poverty, but still have many luxuries.0
