Harold Shipman and the Yorkshire Ripper were someones sons, doesn't make them nice chaps though.
  • You don't know that they have had 'poor education'.
I taught in a very socially deprived area where no regard was held for education at all. It wouldn't matter how outstanding the education, they did not want any. Why work hard at anything in school when you can live on benefits?

    Well said pink !!!!
  • Some people are more susceptible to marketing than others, and different social stratas have different items sold to them s luxuries/essentials.

I think it's important to try and avoid this kind of judgement against "chavs" or the poor and ignorant or the people who buy things that aren't marketed at "us". It just feels a bit distasteful, especially on a generally nice board like this one. Trainers/designer garb is just spending money on feeling ok, fitting in or being confident. Don't we all spend our money on similar things in one way or another? Especially the opportunity to give those feelings to our families.

i am on a state pension and pension credit ONLY> yes, i am always skint and behind with my bills. BUT i have these things you mention - not new i have to add - but i couldnt be in touch with my family with these things. and its all cost me nothing. my computer screen, nice new flat screen was given to me by my son; not new but still very serviceable. the tower with all the workings in was given to me by a very good friend, and i have had it only a month or so. before that i didnt have a computer at all. i used my daughters when i stayed with her. my phone is an old one of my sons, and just a bog standard mobile. my tv came from my son also; he works in removals and teh person he was moving didnt want it any more and asked him if he did, so he got it for me; again not a new one, but a great tv none the less.

so yes, i have all these things, but my nearest and dearest are recycling everything in my direction and its money saving at its best.

a christmas present this year is a sewing machine. 2nd hand and quite old, but who cares??? its brilliant. and i wouldnt have it any other way.

and i have to say that like you, i would love to know how they get the money for all that stuff. maybe they just dont eat properly or something.

Cash convertors or whatever the shop is where you can pay weekly. The family we swaped houses with have 6 kids and neither work but they have 2 large leather sofa's and 40+ in TV. The TV is costing £68 a month.

rob m8 but mum had no money and dad had none and poor little daughter had no money but they had a iphone worth xxx that they could not even afford to credit.. surely you get the irony of it all..

I live near a town that i was in yesterday and i refuse to go there often as it is just full of society's bottom feeders. The local asda has to be seen to be believed..i have honestly seen people shopping in dressing gowns and slippers..also the mouths on the mothers shouting at the kids would make a docker blush ..i come away angry sad and confused as i just can not see a way out and if these people are breeding at the rate they are with no thought for anyone else ...i feel we will end up in a very very dark place.
    where did we go wrong?

Sounds just like where we live (not a town just area of shops) but we have a co-op. Can't stand the place, going out in PJ's is a common thing, everyone knows everyone, everyone's loud, no-one works other than the shop people. Everyone wears grey and has a staff (chav dog as we call it), our nick name is 'chav town'. Thankfully we are moving out in feb.

Don't need to care much if it's other peoples money that you are paying with.
