Thoughts please - engine mount snapped, been repaired, now gears are spongy

On the 23rd my husbands car broke down, luckily only down the road. Turned out to be the engine mount had snapped. We got it repaired on Christmas eve thankfully.

But, he took it for a test drive and the lower gears (1,3,R) felt spongy. After a longer drive and the engine heating up, reverse gear went.

I'm hoping it is just the gear cables have stretched when the engine mount snapped, but could it be something worse?

Not too bad right now as he is using my car to get to work but come the 11th it will be needing repaired. Gives me 2 weeks to get some cash up.

It is a renault megane diesel estate 04 plate.

Certainly sound related to an alignment issue, not sure if they have rods or cables though?

My mum had a Ren 14 years ago, A reg, and I was driving it in teenage mode and snapped the selector rod at the gearbox end, it was welded up whilst the part was ordered, never felt quite right, but was fine after the new part was fitted, sadly I don't know much about how your Megane works.

My wifes Clio is a diesel but it is so packed in you can't even see what goes where.

sounds like when the mount snapped it put strain on the gear selector and possibly bent it?

  • theres no clucth cable but is hydrolic, what you describe the gear linkage cables may have stretched slightly or one has come loose, failing that it could be that the gear selector has moved slightly (a pole that goes from the gear stick through to the gear box it sits in a hole precisley to get the right gear and is clamped into place with something that looks like a clamp for a bike seat)if its slighlty out youll find some gears easy to get into while others maybe missing or difficult to select if at all.

    Is it eay to fix?

The mechanic said that after the mount snapped the engine was rocking back and forward. It wasn't driven far so the hope was that not much damage was done. He couldn't see any but ofcourse that didn't mean there wasn't any.

We'll take it to the same place but as it's Christmas/Newerday, it's shut.

My gut feeling (and to be honest I am usually right, the gear box went on our trajet a few months ago and I knew it was done, which it was) is that it is something small, so here's hoping.

    Thanks guys!

if the engine rocked back and forth (and i must say they do but not excessivly) then another mount has been damaged somewhere if driverside mount went then rear gearbox mount may have gone with it, easy fix just a new aluminium mount with rubber and two three bolts, but if it isnt that, it maybe just a case of ruling one out from another by adjusting the selector, and looking at the gearlinkages for signs of stretching or damage. gear linkage cables are maindealer parts so cant tell you how much it'll cost you, but again relativly eay to put right.

I'm actually suprised he couldn't tell the engine mount was gone to be honest.

You usually get many warning signs i.e

    a) excessive vibration
    B) knocking/clanging
    C) you can actually feel the engine moving

I've just picked up a Laguna dci and noticed straight away the engine mount was worn from the vibratio/slight knocking noise

Gearbox mounts aren't that expensive, Dogbone mount at the rear will set you back around £30 and the top mount will be about £120 as Renault use fluid filled mounts.

the labour is where it's at tbh

I don't think there's anything to support that from what the OP has said. It simply snapped allowing excessive engine/box movement. He was effectively trying to move the whole unit with the gear stick.

Another victim of those dam pothholes?

Hopefully carefull realigning of the selector shaft clamp will rectify the issue.

Don't think there'll be much more help here as with Renaults being usually so reliable, no one else is likely to have suffered this problem,;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
