Why are people scared of evenweave?

Starting a stitch (for this example from bottom left to top right)
    • On aida, you would go up one hole and along one hole when deciding where to put your needle through next
    • On evenweave, you go up two holes and along two holes
Plus, you have the advantage of having the extra *half holes* between the main stitches for the fractional ones.

You also get a much smoother unstitched background - more like ordinary fabric because the holes are much more evenly spaced than on Aida.

Both have their uses, but honestly, evenweave isn't all that scary :)

    1. Current project you are working on?

Giraffe and Baby. http://www.overstock.com/Crafts-Sewing/Giraffe-Mother-and-Baby-Counted-Cross-Stitch-Kit/3372822/product.html?cid=133635 I didn't buy it from there but that's the best picture of it.

    2. Favourite project (either stitched or awaiting to be stitched?)

    Definitely Santa. finishedandframed.jpg
Not a great pic really but definitely a great project. The first really large project I've done (only Tatty Ted / Lickle Ted type things before) and very special to me because I chose the design for my husband but during the course of stitching it he left me, so I finished it anyway as a testament to my determination and ability to get on without him. It's also a great reminder of all my friends and support on here. (and yes I did get it on the wall for this Christmas, even though I thought that might be a bit painful. I feel really proud of myself every time I look at it.)

I don't have any favourites in my unstitched collection as all my unstitched kits are ones that I have inherited from various places and haven't chosen for myself. I'm collecting all the DMC threads so that I can just pick something from a magazine and stitch it.

    3. Your favourite cross stitch magazine (nb do you subscribe?)

I don't buy mags very often, I have currently got a 3 month for £1 deal with Cross Stitcher and Cross Stitich Collection but I normally only buy them if I see something that I absolutely love and know I'll stitch. I'm not a particularly fast stitcher so I don't need to find many designs that I like to keep me busy.

    4. best stitching gadget?

My Symphony frame, it has a good clip mechanism so I can get started quickly and can change the project on the frame easily if I want. I'm hoping to get an Elbesse floor stand to go with it at my next birthday (May) and I hope that will make it even better.

    5. french knots - hate or love ?

Neither really. I don't like them very much but I do enjoy how the knots and backstich can bring a piece of work to life. I can usually do french knots OK but I don't like it when a design has tons of them. A few for eyes etc is fine though.

    6. Favourite theme to stitch (i.e. pooh / tatty ted / HAED etc)

I don't really have a favourite. I've done lots of likcle ted, some pooh bear and my santa. I think my tastes are changing and I'm looking at maybe doing a john clayton view next. Possibly this one http://www.stitchability.co.uk/under%20the%20arch%20cross%20stitch%20kit.jpg

    7. aida or evenweave ?

Evenweve every time. I used to be quite worried about using it but after doing Santa on evenweve I now love it and wouldn't go back to aida.

    8. favourite needlecraft supplier ?

Ebay. I don't buy much really, just mags from the supermarket when there is something that grabs my attention and I get fabric and threads from ebay. I use metalic threads (from ebay) when needed but I don't like beads on my work so I replace beads with appropriate metallics when required.

    Hello girls,

Will try this again - managed to close application down and lost all I typed - still getting used to this new computer. Had a wee bit of a blue day yesterday - trying my best to get over it.

Off to tidy up after - sort out alot of stuff and have a good tidy up - clear out alot of rubbish.

Hubby should be up soon and we can go shopping.

Hope are all well in your part of the world.

    Kind wishes to all

    sweetcarer ;)

PS Thought I share a picture of Sam (& me) for you all at Christmas

    104_1282.jpg

    1. Current project you are working on?

With all the tidying up I am planning to do I hope to get started on the free kits with mags before attempting a big thing.

    2. Favourite project (either stitched or awaiting to be stitched?)

I think my favourite is my floral alphabet - I did in memory of my late husband. It also brought me back my love of cross stitch after many years of abandonment.

    Week203.jpg
    3. Your favourite cross stitch magazine (nb do you subscribe?)

I subscribe to cross stitch collection and cross stitcher - tho I feel not to happy with the new version of cross stitcher.

    4. best stitching gadget?

A wee cutter so I can use it on the plane.

    5. french knots - hate or love ?

Depends on my mood and their mood - if they play or not.

    6. Favourite theme to stitch (i.e. pooh / tatty ted / HAED etc)

    I enjoy doing samplers.

    7. aida or evenweave ?

I like aida for every day use but if the pattern has ½, ¼ & ¾ stitches evenweave makes it so much easier.

    8. favourite needlecraft supplier ?

    http://www.across-town-stitching.talktalk.net/

    or ebay for bargins

Hi all, could I please join in for 2011.

My sister gave me a cross-stitch Christmas card kit yesterday and said she would like it back, completed, as her card next year.
She knows me so well - I have many UFOs but haven't done much craft work this year; I tell myself it's because I'm short of time, but I think I need to get motivated again.

I have set myself a target of a handmade Christmas 2011, so aim to finish a stitched card or gift tag per month, plus a bit of progress on a larger project. I'm not sure which one yet.

I will come back and answer the questions later.

Wishing you all a Happy and productive New Year.

  • Hi, I hope someone can help me.

I'm a first time cross stitcher and am about to start a project that calls for 2 strands of crewel wool - does this mean i use 2 pieces of the 2 ply as is, or do i need to separate the 2 ply?

Hope this makes sense and thanks in advance!
