Good Old Fashioned ????? and Moneysaving - bedspreads

At the minute we've got a duvet but I have back problems so you can imagine the battle it is changing it  OH is too ill to be able to do it and I really am trying to pick the right time to suggest we revert to blankets and a bedspread.
On the subject of sweepers............I 'inherited' Mums old Ewbank (no-one else wanted it) it's working after a fashion but I could do with a replacement. I love it............it's lightweight so I can manage to keep on top of things till neighbours daughter comes once a week to hoover for me.
Mary, you might already do this, but had you thought of placing a sheet (I use flannelette) between you and the duvet cover? Doesn't need washing so often (the cover I mean!) and it keeps out all of those little niggly draughts.:)The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

Butter knives! I don't suppose many people use them any longer but I do. I inherited my mother's set of sweet little bone-handled ones and I'm almost certain that they were part of my granny's trousseau or wedding-present when she left domestic-service in about 1927, so if I look after them and myself they might get to their centenary without a trip to the charity-shop.
Does anyone still use a cheese-knife any more? Or coffee-spoons?0 -

My Grandmother always had those cloths over the back of her armchairs, probably because grandad always used Brylcreme, she also had ones that fit over the arms too.Dum Spiro Spero0 -
Does anyone still have a proper tea strainer? I think these are very OS because I like my tea weaker than a teabag allows & I can take the damp leaves straight out to the roses! It has to be mesh, however, to catch all the leaves.
Strainers are an area of controvery with MIL (what's new?) as she has a coffee strainer that she swears is a tea strainer. It is solid metal with large holes - think big enough to let split peas through! The fact that it was her mother's makes the blessed thing perfect in her eyes, even though it cannot catch any tea-leaves as the holes are way too big! (perfect size for coffee grounds iyswim).
I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -
Proper old fashioned tablespoons. I bought one in a charity shop for pence and I use it everyday for measuring when cooking and baking.0

I have quite a few butter knives found in charity shops/bric a brac over the years. I also have a set of butter knives with coloured handles which I found when a friend was clearing her mil house and she didnt want them! Aslo took an aluminium soup pan at the same time which are hugely unpopular but I think are great!
I also have cheese knives and loads of coffee spoons so definitely qualify! I also have a set of proper scales which I found in a junk shop in Devon nearly 20 years ago and have been used every day- they are just fab!0 -

Oh, you lucky minx! I've had weighing-scales envy for such a long time but just can't justify spending the amount of money they seem to go for these days, even second-hand.0 -

Well, I'm definitely OS because I have everything mentioned on here; wouldn't be without my "proper" tablespoons - mine are all silver plated and ANCIENT, obviously the ends of dinner services belonging to a dozen great-aunts - none of them matches my own "good" cutlery.
My two penn'orth - cloth napkins. I have about seven sets of four "everyday" ones and they are in use every day. My daughter puts out four new ones on Sundays and last week's set goes in the wash. They are often quite manky by then, but come up fine when washed. The fact that they are quite manky speaks volumes about how much less clothes washing I have to do as a result.
And - sorry if it sounds like I'm terribly grand, which I assure you I'm not - I wouldn't be without my dinner gong.:rotfl: It's just a small one, not a big J Arthur Rank thing. I bang it 5 minutes before dinner and the family come straight in, like the Pavlov's dogs they are. Much better than yelling myself hoarse - it seems to carry over the garden, cut through Ipods and computers and telly - brilliant. Plus, when the kids were little, they used to take it in turns to bang it - they're far too old to care now, but small visitors still like it.0 -
I do have a butter knife & butter dish; cheese knife & cheese dish with wedge-shaped cover; caddy spoon for leaf-tea & tea-strainer (though I don't drink tea personally); mustard pot with tiny spoon; jam pot with spoon; and 'proper' tablespoons - but what I really need to replace are my sugar tongs - the last pair snapped in the middle
.
For years my kids have laughed at my collection of kitchenalia bits and pieces - but they all come in useful, including my grandmother's egg-separator.
A couple of months ago, my son wanted my help with the catering for his son's Chistening Party and on the day before he asked me where he could buy a 'gateau/cheesecake slice server. To his surprise, I produced 3 of them out of the 'gadget&gizmo drawer'. Next time he laughs, I'll remind him ............
