What a good idea to use a duvet cover, I'm sure that there are lots of designs to choose from. :T
Had you thought of using a double flat sheet, which would be 90x100 inches? They are also available in lots of plain colours? :)

I went out looking for a flat sheet - that was my original idea - and I know there was a reason why it wasn't going to work, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was now.

The duvet cover is okay - I split the top and bottom to make two tablecloths, and the snap-fasteners are still left in one of them, because it would have torn the fabric to take them out. It's a bit thin though. I do have a big cotton throw that I also use, and it makes a better tablecloth really, because it's heavy enough to stay put, if you see what I mean.

I wish I could find that table-protector fabric in a big enough width though - I've had to make do with a sort-of patchwork-with-masking-tape effect for now.

And a bit of vinyl that was wide enough. It would be nice to have something I could wipe clean.

Hi Blueberry I used to work in a furniture department of a large store. (Now gone, sadly) but we used to be able to order table protector made to measure...not cheap I'm afraid, but they even used to make them for those shaped Italian-style tables. Have you tried John Lewis or similar? Funnily enough they were often sold on the curtains department! HTH :)

Also, I'm not sure if this is an old style thing or just a quirk - but with proper loaves of bread (ie. bloomer type, not sliced) my nan ALWAYS puts the butter on first and then slices across the bread, she does the most perfect slices!

Yes! My granddad used to do this too - I thought it was just an odd quirk of his but clearly not!

I'm 48 and I wore one over my vest in winter, until I was about 6 years old :D

You didn't happen to get the 'camphorated oil' rubbed on the chest, treatment as well, did you? I hated having to go to school stinking of that stuff when I had a cough/cold :D

One whiff of 'camphorated oil' and I am instantly transported back to my childhood!! (wonder what camphorated means?? wanders off to google......)
    Slightly bitter
