Good Old Fashioned ????? and Moneysaving - bedspreads

I have used a duvet since 1973 (obviously not the same one!!) and it has never crossed my mind to worry about dust on the cover and pillows, the pillows are covered by the duvet anyway. And surely a throw is just the modern name for a bedspread/counterpane anyway????Slightly bitter0

I spent ages looking for a proper blanket last year - shops had throws a plenty but blankets were tricky (or pricey) to find. I eventually found one in TK Maxx and I love it - bigger and snugglier than a throw.People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

gosh this has brought back some memories!:) I have a hot waterbottle, bedspreads(or throws), butter dish, dustpan and brush, wear an apron, no dishwasher, shoe-horn.
I'd like a butter knife now so will be scouring the carboots for one. I also have a little pot with a lid - I think its for honey but the tiny spoon is missing(I use it for sugar) so will also be looking for a spoon for that.
I remember well our old twin-tub - it used to 'walk' all over our kitchen floor in the flat we lived in:D but it spun so much better than modern machines.
I also have lots of pyrex dishes, nearly all bought for pence at carboots.
DH is like me - we like certain tools for certain jobs. We do have a tea strainer too but DH uses it for making healthy brews for his pigeons:D
oh and we also have a teapot which a lot of people dont seem to have nowadays.
forgot to say that DH uses soap and a shaving brush rather than foam.Do what you love :happyhear0 -
Maybe it's just me, but even if I eat a sandwich, I feel the need to wipe fingers and/or mouth at the end of it. OK, so you could use kitchen towel, but why burn down the rain forest when you've got something green and reusable right there?
Kitchen towels made from recycled paper?
I couldn't use the same napkin for a whole week  If I used cloth ones they would have to go in the wash as soon as they got dirty. Having said that I don't use napkins anyway - or kitchen towels. Straight after eating I go and wash up so my hands get clean then0 -

I always use a teapot because I use loose tea. I've got one with a built-in strainer, so as soon as it is the right colour (which is very quickly - I can't abide strong tea) I can take the tea leaves out.0 -
This thread has made me really look around to see what we are still using...Napkins, yes a great laundry saver, fish knives and forks, much easir for removing those little bones, an old 'tala measure' conical, with all of the quantities marked inside like rice, flour, sugar etc. I'd love a gong, we've got a little handbell which my mother used to keep by the bed when someone was 'poorly', saves a lot of shouting!
I think anti-maccassars should make a comeback when you think of all of the products some people use on their hair:eek:
Can anyone remember 'apostle spoons'? I remember my mother having them. Were they what you call coffee spoons bitter and twisted? I just remember them having the figure of an apostle on top and being smaller than teaspoons. The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

Teapots...I find that I can make one teabag make two cups if I use it, and it doesn't go 'scummy' like when I make it in the cup:)The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.

Re the Tala measures - they sell them in Dunelm Mill! http://www.dunelm-mill.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product1_11100_-1_48992_10551
I bought one two years ago & as I have dropped it several times (bad hands) it looks properly vintage!
You could get apostle spoons in various sizes: I had a lovely set of teaspoons in the original case from my grandmother, but donated them to Oxfam after an earthquake appeal.I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -

so making tea in a tea pot will stop the floating stuff i always get on my tea (cant work out where it comes from!!!)? I am going to have to get a teapot now!0 -

I have this mad idea that apostle spoons were originally given as christening presents but I could be making it up. The dinky little coffee-spoons I have came to me when my mother died; they're silver and hardly ever used because I have no tiny coffee-cups to go with them. I might go on a snoop round the charity-shops and see if I can find some.
Does anyone use one of those fancy tiered cake-stands any more? The only places I've seen any lately are in those rather expensive, retro tea-rooms that seem to be all the rage0
