  • This is lovely. I still dream of my old twin tub I bought for £2 in an auction, when I was 18, I loved it. I am going to have one again in my next place, so much quicker, economical and enviromental!

I have pinnies, and bedspreads, hot water bottles. I love it. And covering things with weighted cloths instead of yucky cling film.

great thread, im between new and old!
I have a hot water bottle for cold months, but I also have a "bedspread" now called a throw which is effectively the same thing! Something that goes on the top of the bed and hides the duvet or covers underneath, and is warm!
We also top guest beds with throw / counterpane / bedspread - they kick it off if too hot, and it finishes the room and gives a good first impression.
I would give up my washer for a twin tub tho, unfortunately I dont have time to stand over it sadly, otherwise, I would, my nans "wash day" was an inspiration thats lost with time sadly. I dont have a shoe horn, but I need a clothes brush as the roller sticky thing isnt the same!
Sweepers were ace, and I also remember us getting our first colour TV! and also the amazement when kids find out today that there werent always remote controls, or that the originals had a wire to the tv, or that my first PC had less memory than my current phone = ALOT less! Or that Michael Jackson was once black... they dont believe me!
As for pinnies, the lady that does our commercial laundry asked if I could wear one, as I choose such bizarre coloured chef jackets, she cant bleach them and wants to get them clean and pinnies are easier!
some things were there for a reason and shouldnt ever change!

  • Lino - I mean the proper linoleum stuff not vinyl. Lasts for years and years. antiseptic properties make it hygenic ( especially with 5 cats).

Hand mincers. Good for using up left over meat as mince, or for prepping bits for chutney and jam/marmalade making.

The good old fashioned washing up bowl, often over looked but definitely old style ( though mine is plastic sadly and not enameled).

Pyrex - doesn't taint/discolour/rust. Can be used in the fridge/oven/on the table I have a few new bits but most is old from relatives/charity shops/bootfairs ...

Petticoats and vests. The easiest way to stay warm is by extra layers. Big jumpers are ok but an extra layer underneath is worth it's weight in gold.
    Put the kettle on. ;)

Pyrex and ceramic mixing bowls and measuring jugs are just so much more awesome than plastic - and easier to clean if like me you don't have a dishwasher!

I have an apron too (though half the time I forget to wear it) and I'm always getting wet when washing up or dirty when cooking!

We have 2 hot water bottles, and I can't understand why anyone would prefer an electric blanket.

I have a huge fuzzy blanket on the bed as when it's really gold it warms you up faster when you get in bed, but then during the night when I get too hot i can let the OH have all the duvet and I have all the blanket, because the fabric it's made from is really warm (and snuggly)!

I love original features like picture rails and still have a collection of picture rail hooks I used when I was a kid and we lived in houses with picture rails. I hate the random nails in the walls in this rented place, and picture rails making adding/changing pics on the walls so much quicker and easier.
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.

I miss proper butter knives. :o (they're MS because you get a better thinner spread on your bread (I don't like it thickly or unevenly spread - need it all the way to the edges).:o

Ah the magic of Pyrex,I still have the first bowl I ever bought and I only wish I had a pound for every shepards pie I made in it since 1962.The bottom is slightly misted but its still in use. Some of my stuff I have had for so long they are like old friends.I too have a shoe horn and my late husbands clothes brush.
I miss the bedspreads though but wouldn't buy one now as they are far too expensive.I used to have a lilac candlewick one I can't remember what happened to it,lost in one of our many moves over the years I expect. My late Mums Ewbank I had for years until it finally fell apart I can remember 'riding' on it as she pushed my up the hall to sweep the runner that went along the hall over the lino when I was a little girl.It was a big old wooden thing and she had it for years before I ever did.As for washing up bowls I did own a dishwasher once but gave it away as I never used it and reverted to washing up as I had always done. Both of my Dds have dishwashers but I can't be doing with them ,they seem to take for ages andits quicker to get the marigolds on and do it myself.Although to be fair my youngest has five children and works four days a week so its used everyday ,apart from Sundays when I am there having dinner:)

I didn't either, until I got rheumatoid arthritis. On the bad days it is the only thing that reaches the pain. I toast like a lizard in the sun

My mum treasures her stone hot water bottle but warns me that they can be very painful if you kick whilst asleep (bitter experience, she says) & everybody wakes up should it fall out of bed!

Butter knives I agree with you. I wouldn't make a sandwich without one! I have two, one serrated which means you can cut the sandwich when you're finished...less washing up. I think that I got it from lakeland.
Hot water bottles...I bought one from B&M last week 99p without cover £1.99 with a micro fleece cover. A real bargain I thought. We used to have knitted ones on ours....

PS. Pyrex...I once heard that the best way to get one really clean was to give someone an apple crumble in it. They'll return it spotless!:rotfl:
