i've thought about getting one of these cos i don't have a tumble drier.....are the spin driers cheap to use, anyone know??0 -

I believe Macasser oil also had darkening dyes in it.

Spin driers are much cheaper to run than TD's, my last one (half of a twin tub) used about 200 watts compared to the 3Kw a tumble drier uses. They typically spin at around 3000rpm and stuff comes out like damp planks!! which you have to shake and hang up for a few hours. A good bit of advice would be to get one that has a pump rather than one that sits on the drainer as they are much easier to use and sit on when they decide to go off on their own!!!
On the subject of twin tubs does anyone still use them? I have seen a couple of models in John Lewises and did notice that they are still popular on the continent where usually a choice of makes/models is available and usually at a cheaper price than over here. The quicker you fall behind, the longer you have to catch up...0 -

In this house I must be posh as I have "Counterpanes" no common bedspreads here. In fact when I was nobbut a lad my counterpane was made of "Persian Lamb" and had sleeves and buttons too! LOL In fact anything and everything ended up on the beds when it was freezing outside (and in)
The only other things I can think of that are not now common are shoe horns and anti macassars both of which save unnecessary wear and marks!
Hi, I love this thread and hope that you don't me adding to it. I love those cellular blankets. They wash and dry quickly and easily, much easier than quilts. (That's why they use them in hospitals)
We rediscovered them when Dad was having a few problems after having a 'bag' fitted.:o We were buying cheap quilts and binning them at one time:eek: So for anyone with little ones who are having the occasional accident...
I've managed to get them at charity shops for £2 or £3 each and we use them as throws, summer blankets (much lighter) and extra layers on top of quilts in the winter as they trap the warm air in. I have one folded on my knees at the moment (four layers...mmmm:))
Just salvaged Dads' clothes brush and hanging rack as he's moving house and didn't want it. We were just saying that you don't see them anymore. The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

....What I really miss and can't find is the old-fashioned glass scrubbing board .I bought one when I first got married and it cost me 2/6 and I had it for years .It was the best thing for getting stains out ,especially from collars and cuffs. I saw one once at a boot sale and the woman wanted £20.00 !! for it as she said it could be used as an ornament in the garden !!
Glass? Luxury!
mum's is a weird metal - I'd say aluminium but wonder if it's zinc - anyway it has not rusted in the 40 odd years she's had it (bought mid-1960s as she thjought they were going out of fashion!)
Dad spent ages recently making it a new wooden frame as the litlle 'leg' bits had worn away!I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -
I fondly remember wooly blankets and eiderdowns, houses were so cold in those days I would have snuggled down with the pig if we had one. When I was a teenager necessity taught me to make my own stuff. If I wanted a fancy bedroom I had to buy remnants and sew them myself. Now I have an old single duvet under the sheets not just for warmth but to cover the lumpy mattress ! and a beautiful patchwork throw folded over the end of the bed - not my own work. Best of all I have a deep red fleece blanket, Mum got from charity shop for 1 pound and thats kept me snug this winter. The only problem is all the bottoms of my books have red fleece fluff on them, at least I will know Ive already read them when I see them in the charity shop:)Clearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.
I will get my caravan0 -
Bedspreads out of fashion? Not at my house, they aren't. I must have about a dozen of them in the airing cupboard. It's lovely ringing the changes by dragging one out that I haven't used in a while. I'm not using one at the moment as I bought a totally luxurious American comforter on ebay last year which is on the bed on top my winter-weight duvet. Sometimes I have to fold it back in the middle of the night as it's sooooooooo snug.
I'm not an old person yet but I must be practically the only who actually does own a clothes-brush and a shoe-horn and I use them both regularly. Good clothes and shoes/boots deserve looking after properly.
I know I'm getting old because I've been thinking about buying a pinny to wear when cooking or doing the housework . I have turned into my granny and I hardly noticed it happening.0 -
On the continent especially Germany the duvets are hung out of the window to air I wouldn't go that far but I do fold my duvet into four and put on the bottom of my bed until bedtime so the sheet and bed is aired similar to GR
I wouldn't be without my apron and wear it when i am cooking or baking.it has a pocket at the front that holds all the bits and pieces that I find as I am cleaning.
My best thing is my old fashioned wooden airer that I have had for over 40 years it cost me 2/6 in Woolworths and my eldest DD learned to walk by pulling herself up and holding on to it as she walked around it.She is 43 this year.
My ironing board I got wwith my Greenshield stamps back in 1972 and its metal and huge, and the covers cost me around £12.00 a time but its brilliant for iroing sheets and duvet covers (yes I know I am old-fashioned but everything gets ironed in my house)My youngest DD says when I shuffle off this mortal coil she wants it (got a long wait though)0 -
Ohh good thread....shaving brush and soap...that's a good idea, shaving gel seems to cost a fortune. OH has a birthday coming up and so does my Dad so that sounds like pressies sorted. My ex used one and even the Penhaligon's stuff he used lasted for ever.
Another vote for hot water bottles, I've just splashed out £2 on a new fleecy cover on mine having used a pillowcase for a while - the new case is fab!Piglet

At the minute we've got a duvet but I have back problems so you can imagine the battle it is changing it  OH is too ill to be able to do it and I really am trying to pick the right time to suggest we revert to blankets and a bedspread.
On the subject of sweepers............I 'inherited' Mums old Ewbank (no-one else wanted it) it's working after a fashion but I could do with a replacement. I love it............it's lightweight so I can manage to keep on top of things till neighbours daughter comes once a week to hoover for me.I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !
