  • Only yesterday I upgraded my 1.5 firmware to 2.71 SE-B.

I only found this out yesterday, but basically you get this program, download the 1.5 and 2.71 official firmware and it will combine them together so you can run all 1.5 homebrew and 2.71 games.

Its great because I bought that Lemmings at empiredirect.com for £7.99 but didn't want to loose my homebrew ability, and now I have both, plus all the extra features you get in 2.71.

You can get the program at https://www.projectpsp.com and the firmware at http://dl.qj.net/PSP-Firmwares/catid/163.

    Don't forget to thankme :)

Much easier to downdate and use DevHook. You don't lose any functionality of 2.71 if using DevHook. The downdate program is by DarkAlex, too.

Does anyone know the cheapest place to buy a psp from? Whether it be the base pack or value pack?

Also, I mean one that is able to downgrade the fw? So basically, I'm after an up to 2.71 firmware, without the ta-082 motherboard. Anyone know for sure where these are available from at the cheapest price?

    TIA
  • Going rates for Base packs are £150, Value packs £180.
Sony have a price control thing going on with centresoft so it's hard to find bargains.

Plus a lot of shops now have ones you can't downgrade like the TA-082 motherboard ones and the firmware is now at 2.82 and they haven't hacked that as yet. You could buy something that you can't use.

I tried to get someone in Gamestation to open one up for me before I bought it off of Amazon but the guy wouldn't break the seal for me to check.

There are lots of places selling the older stock. I got mine in Tesco - it had 2.6 firmware on it and a non-TA_082 mobo. So far, I have yet to come across as person who has bought one (or got one for free) that was a TA-082 mobo with the latest firmware!

How much do they cost in tesco???
  • At the mo, the base pack is £149 (if memory serves me right - I got mine for free from Mr. T because they overcharged me.)

How come it was free? What do you mean overcharged you?

Dunno whether to get the base pack for £149 from tescos (but taking a change on it being below version 2.71 and without the ta-082 motherboard), the value pack for £160 from the internet, also taking the chance (although limited stocks, so might not have any when come to order :(), or a japanese value pack definately with the 1.5 firmware (and apparantly with a UK charger) for £175.

    What would be people's advice?

I've also heard that the Japanese versions have better screens in them (a sharp compared to a samsung, which apparantly is duller and not so good). Can anyone comment on this? And if anyone knows what level of service would be received in need of warranty with it being a japanese version?

    Cheers

No its not. You don't need DevHook if you are using 2.71 SE-B. Best thing about it is iso's appear in the list of games stored on your memory stick, along with the homebrew. And the UMD is selectable as per a normal game (and you cannot update accidentally unless you buy a brand new game which has 2.8x firmware on it). The only thing that doesn't seem to work for me at the moment is GPSP, but you can still use DevHook to emulate 1.5 firmware if you want to run this (or if you want to over-clock the CPU speed you need to use DevHook although I think there is a new patch just release to easily overclock without DevHook).

There are easy installers for all this from the creator of DevHook. Just check out https://www.psp-hacks.com and find the links from there. There is no chance of bricking your psp - basically you need to start off from a 1.5 psp, download the software to you psp, run it, it flashes your firmware, wait a bit, it reboots and you are running 2.71 SE-B. If you are not happy with it or your favourite game/homebrew no longer works then you can use DevHook, but if it still doesn't work then you reboot holding the right trigger button and the option is there to "recover" your 1.5 psp.

As an aside, after a good start the sales of the psp are really struggling at the moment. The best thing that Sony can do is make the thing open source and stop updating firmware to block homebrew. The psp is a fantastic piece of kit, but the best thing about it is the homebrew scene.

By saying "recover" the psp, does that mean that if you tried doing something to the psp, and it bricked it, then you could recover it, or would you not be able to recover that?

Have just been trying to find out as much as poss about this... So all help appreciated :)

    Cheers
