Has anyone come across, or does anyone use "Microsoft security essentials"?
I have just installed it, and I seem to have lost Windows Defender as a result.
I am a trifle worried by this, as I cannot monitor the security as I would wish.

You have, and that's because MSE has its own internal version of defender, nothing at all to worry about. If you ever have the need to uninstall MSE your original version of defender will automatically be re-enabled.

Any reason why you chose Avast? MSE just released version 2 which now includes Heuristics Checking so picks up more malware than it used to.

I've always liked it, although I have used MSE before.

Just a matter of personal choice really. They're both good.

Avast, MSE, and Avira are the good ones usually recommended on here...

As of last quarters AV-comparatives report MSE seemed to be slipping slightly in detection rates, Symmantec (paid for) was moving back up towards 'good' and AVG seemed to be dragging itself from 'completly dire' in a slightly more positive direction. But i'll wait for the next report and see how many posts along the lines of I'm using antivirus X and got this nasty virus threads crop up around the place before drawing any firm conclusions.

When will Version 2 of Microsoft Essentials be available for upgrade? When I click upgrade it comes back as having the most up to date version.

As i understand the latest AVG is now the full edition rather than the less full of older editions .
