Link removed. What is a "hijackthis log"?
I am now quite worried about this, because I have a lot of work details which I do not want to lose, and a lot of photo albums which I and a lot of other people will not want me to lose.

Many thanks for your, and everyone else's help.
I managed to get Malwarebytes installed eventually, and it found 34 items and removed them.
I will now be running this on a weekly basis (it took about 30 minutes for the quick/basic scan).
This whole thing is one big learning curve, and although I would not say that I am PC illiterate, without your help, I would be stuck, and probably have to shell out some hard cash to have the problem fixed.
So a big :beer::beer: to you and everyone, and I hope that you all have a great Christmas and a fantastic new year.

Do do a full scan with malwarebytes, then scan with this, save log, and copy and paste the contents here - if you browse around the forum, you will see many examples on how to use hijackthis

    http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/hijackthis/HijackThis.exe

and backup your data to dvd or external hard disk (don't move it, copy, so you have 2 copies)

If your resident antivirus has been disabled, you also need to fix this, malwarebytes is not a replacement for a virus scanner, it's a supplement
