Yes, more taxes - that's always the answer!

it's a great way of raising money to pay for the trappings of living in a civilised society. haven't you heard?

i part own an overseas property and there is an annual tax on that based on value as well as rental income. it's a good way of being a giver as well as a taker.

Yes. I've heard it. Over and over again from the usual suspects, as this country has got progressively less civilised and its bureaucracy has swollen on the proceeds.

Dear God! A second home! Call the Guardian, someone!
  • It is a rant which would carry more authority if it were written in a more measured way. I suspect that some Christmas 'spirit' had something to do with it at the time. Nevertheless it does state some truths.

Buy to let took off a few years ago for a number of reasons :- Real interest rates were not sparkling. The stock market was stagnant. Some people saw it as a good status booster to be able to boast that they were 'into property'. It was a bit of an ego trip too, and many of those who participated thought they were smart and on the ball compared with those who opted to stay with safer and more conservative investments. A number of developer sharks managed to palm off overpriced, virtually unlettable properties -- especially flats -- by appealing to this market. The myth that house prices would rise forever -- which also fuelled the banking crash of course -- was alive and well.

No doubt some of the types who got in on this were unsavoury -- and perhaps as amusingly described above of the flashy, arrogant, unprincipled, scumbag variety, though by no means all of them. If it's any consolation a lot of them caught a cold, ended up in negative equity and mortgages they could hardly afford etc. The probably did not engender a lot of fair treatment of tenants in many cases.

The lesson is that nobody should get into buy to let unless they really know what they are doing, understand the property market, know when to buy and at what price, and have sufficient financial resources to bear losses.
No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.

no you'd still pay out on the remaining value of the property - minus any mortgage interest costs.
