International & UK CallChecker discussion

My brother's girlfriend who's staying with us wants to call her parents in Vietnam (not sure if it's a mobile or landline). If we use one of these providers that the callchecker suggests, do we just pay the 3p per minute, or do we pay the 3p per minute (or whatever it is) on top of the 0844 rate?
So, if you're talking about Tele88's 0844 799 0188 number from a BT landline, you'll pay 12½p connection + 2.04p/minute (2.55p/minute if you're calling a Vietnamese mobile using 0844 323 0188).
Remember, charging starts after you have dialled the 11th digit of the 0844 number (i.e. before you even start dialling the 0084 number).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Of the alternative ways of calling abroad, the 0844 route appear to be the most expensive and the VoIP cheapest.
If you are calling from a mobile and have 'free' inclusive minutes, try one of the six listed, five posts above. There are many more.
To call from a landline, some VoIP providers, such as Localphone, give you a normal local number for calling a specific international number. No PC needed.
For details, have a look at http://www.localphone.com/ways_to_connect
You can dial this individual local number to call from your landline and get connected to a number abroad.
Localphone charge 3p to landline and 3.7p to mobiles in Vietnam. There could be others that are cheaper.
BT, TalkTalk and others (depending on the account you have) have times, eg. evenings & weekends, when you can make free calls. So no connection fees or anything else to pay on top.0 -

BT dont offer free/inclusive calls they cost £60 a year.

With Localphone, you do not dial an international number. You dial a normal UK number (starting with 01, 02) that Localphone give you. That will route you to an international number of your choice. To see how it works, have a look at the link for Localphone in my last post.
I left BT long ago, but this BT page suggest that BT do offer free/inclusive weekend calls to UK landline numbers at no extra cost.

I am with Tiscali / TalkTalk Broadband and 'Evening & Weekend Talk' package. £19.74p per month in total, after the recent increase. No connection fees or any other extra charges for calls to UK numbers such as 01, 02 and 03 and to France during evenings and weekends.
So, if I were to call Vietnam, I would (during evenings and weekends) use the local number that Localphone gave me.
I would pay just the 3p per minute or whatever that Localphone charge. Nothing more to anyone else.0 -

> mVoIP Apps to make Wi-Fi calls from mobile phones
Works with smartphones by Nokia, iPhone and Android phones and tablets.
Your account with mobile phone service provider is not involved.
You don't even need a SIM installed.
There are a few of these apps around; some I tried are:
fring
http://www.fring.com
fring recently introduced 'fringout' to call any number using a Wi-Fi connection.
Rates are very low.
MobileVoip
The app supports around 50 brands by Betamax GMBH and Dellmont SARL (VOIP telephony providers)
Few days ago I got an email from MobileVoip saying that they noticed me using fring and asked me to try MobileVoip.
Found that everytime I used MobileVoip, I got whacked with an (FUP exceeded) charge. It happens only when I use MobileVoip and not when using fring or my SIP phone.
I messaged 'Customer Service' of the Betamax brand that I am using. But as usual they did not reply or make a refund.
An email to MobileVoip was also not replied.
Therefore, I do not recommend using MobileVoip.
Avoid!
Nimbuzz!
www.nimbuzz.com
Nimbuzz! is another mVoIP app that I have been in the last few days. It is free to download and use like fring.
Works well. They also have apps for the PC.
> Free Wi-Fi
If you share your broadband connection, with BT Fon, you get free Wi-Fi connection to 2.8 million locations in the UK and across the world.
And four million with Fon Spots worldwide.
You can even make money from your WiFi connection!

Please read this if you use the 0844 access numbers to dial overseas............
I thought this was just happening me???
A copule of times i have used 0844Calls and CheapestCalls to dial abroad. After dialing the access number and entering the number i wanted to call, it starts to ring, someone speaking that countries language answers and says hang on i will just get them. Then you can hear somone running to find the person you were calling. After a few seconds the line goes dead.
This has happened on two different calls now and must be a scam, i asked the person i was calling the first time it happened who that was answering and they had no idea what i was talking about. They had the phone with them and it never rang at all.
This has happened to me on two completely different calls, exactly the same thing.
It must be a scam to get you to call back as it costs 12.5p every time you call them 0844 numbers.
I really want to hear from other people this may have happened to......

Really?
Something has to be wrong though, as this has happened to my girlfriend who was calling someone else.....she told me about it and explained exactly the same thing happening.
I want to know if anyone else has had this experience?0
