I thought this was just happening me???
A copule of times i have used 0844Calls and CheapestCalls to dial abroad. After dialing the access number and entering the number i wanted to call, it starts to ring, someone speaking that countries language answers and says hang on i will just get them. Then you can hear somone running to find the person you were calling. After a few seconds the line goes dead.
This has happened on two different calls now and must be a scam, i asked the person i was calling the first time it happened who that was answering and they had no idea what i was talking about. They had the phone with them and it never rang at all.
This has happened to me on two completely different calls, exactly the same thing.
It must be a scam to get you to call back as it costs 12.5p every time you call them 0844 numbers.
I really want to hear from other people this may have happened to......

The moment you're connected to the 0844 access number you're paying BT immediately, so if the person you're calling is engaged or out,or you misdial you still pay.0 -

I signed up and paid by Paypal to use 2Abroad with my mobile phone (have free calls on there). They sent a text message with the number to call and a PIN number.
I used the number from the message and then added the number I wanted to dial in Australia. It rang for a while then a man answered who told me to hold on. I disconnected straight away as I had read your post.
I then tried the number from the website followed by the Australian number, that got me through to some blokes voicemail. Grrr...
I have emailed them complaining and wanting a refund, I have also raised a dispute via Paypal. Will see what happens...
I since signed up to Localphone and think its the best thing since sliced bread! Easy peasy. Local number to ring which puts me straight through. Have added my landline to my account so can call from either one and still use the same credit. Am recommending it to all.0 -
Best to avoid 0844 and similar type of services.
We make a lot of phones calls to numbers in the UK and abroad. Over three years ago, I decided to shop around.
Found some good advice in MSE and it was the starting point.
At first we tried some 0844 and 0911 services. Total cost, including connection charges and mistakes made, was over £90 per month.
Then we tried 18185, 18866 and call1899. Total cost, including connection charges and mistakes made, came down to £67 per month.
Then we discovered VoIP services. No connection charges and the total cost, including mistakes made, came down to around £8 per month.
All of these (with the exception of LocalPhone based in the UK and PokeTalk) are differently packaged brands of Dellmont SARL aka Betamax GmbH aka Finarea SA.
Common problems encountered are non-existent after sales service, charging errors and their failure to put them right. Since they are based abroad, making legal claims, such as through the Small Claims Procedure is pretty well impossible. But the VoIP services are cheap.
Far better service, quality and reliability were with Localphone.com and PokeTalk.
Localphone.com rates have come down a lot recently.
0.8p to UK landlines, 6p to UK mobiles and 1.2p to mobiles in India, for example.
Many options to call with or without PC. They also have an app to call from mobile phone.
They have a "Try a 5 minute free call" offer right now. Check it out.
PokeTalk.com has a different approach and worth a look.0 -
Does anyone know the cheapest way to call Madagascar? Thanks0

Those are assuming you use BT. If you don't, adjust the 'Pick your landline' box accordingly.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Lycamobile rates appear to be full of errors but I've checked a few others and it seems to check out. There's no call back services listed here for some reason... they're pretty rare anywayOrder of events: Banks lose our money -> get bailed out -> were inflating GBP to cover it -> now taxing us -> next will grab your funds direct -> things get really desperate to balance the books. What should have happened?: banks go bust and we lost our money much quicker0

MO-Call.com is by a company in London
UK landline to UK landline 1.2p
UK landline to UK mobile 9p
UK mobile to UK landline 1.2p
UK mobile to UK mobile 9p
UK mobile/landline to India mobile/landline 1.3p
Weekend rates are lower.
Worldwide roaming option at low rates.
Claims to save around 90%.
Can use normal fixed line phones, mobile phones or PC.
For smart phones they have an app.
Combining a variety of telephony technologies, from SMS to SIP, MO-Call.com seamlessly connect calls.
Customer service is excellent. 24/7 and they gave intelligent and helpful replies within a few minutes.
Breath of fresh air, after charging errors and non-existent after sales service from brands by Dellmont SRL aka Betamax GmbH,
I got 50p free credit when I registered online.
Made few calls using different methods.
Sound quality was good and no connection problems.0 -
Dialwise are useless.
They don't refund call charges (so they break consumer law) where a call fails due to the poor quality of their connection.
How can they be made to reimburse call costs where they fail to provide a service of satisfactory quality?0 -

It is related to Betamax GmbH and Dellmont Sarl. Overcharging and failure to make refund are 'salient feaures' of these companies.
Finarea S.A. is a Swiss based in Lugano. So unlike with a UK based company, not possible to get legal redress using Small Claims Procedure.
I have also lost money with these companies. And many others from what I read in forums.
May be someone could advice on what to do.0 -
