I can remember 81, 81 was much colder wasn't it? I remember ice blocks flowing down the river severn.

Perhaps It was Charles and Diana's wedding stopping the gulf stream that year. :D
  • How on Earth is an oil spill supposed to stop the Gulf Stream?

    Nuts!

I remember 63 - I got a bike for Christmas 1962 and I wasn't able to take it out until around April 1963 - I don't remember the cold - I was about 8 - but I do remember the snow drifts outside the village where we lived - you could sit on the top deck of the bus and you weren't looking at the top of them. I lived in Northumberland. It lasted for months.

In 1981/2 I lived in Scotland and it was very, very cold - we had a lot of snow that lasted a long time. We just moved into a new house about a week before Christmas and the builders had fitted the wrong joints to the mains water pipes up in the loft - and they all popped - so we had water cascading down through the loft hatch - deep joy.

I delivered a neighbours baby in her downstairs loo on the 8th Jan 1982 - and had my own on 10th Jan - fortunately I managed to get to the hospital - the hospital wouldn't let you home with the babies if you didn't have full central heating - the windows were icing up in the hospital - a friend who was totally cut off had to be airlifted out of her place after giving birth in the living room - it lasted for a couple of months. It wasn't pleasant.

While we lived in Scotland we had had more snow than 1982 - both before and after it - but we hadn't had anything that lasted as long or where it was frozen for as long.

I think there is a high pressure sitting in the Atlantic and the jet stream is being pushed away from us - letting the cold weather through - I understand there are no signs of the high pressure moving in the immediate future. Didn't a similar thing give us a lousy summer recently - was it last year?

I'm not bothered - more or less set for Christmas and to be honest where we live we have had it relatively easy compared to a lot - we had a big fall of snow on Saturday morning (we aren't all that far from Heathrow - about 30 miles to the west) and a few showers since then - but nothing dramatic - but it has been very cold. Earlier in the year was much worse for us than this has been snow wise.

The only thing I'm dreading are the winter bills in March - we have a big house and the bills are bad enough at the best of times - now heating is on 24/7 along with the gas fire during the day and evening. But such is life.

The dog and grandson are enjoying it all though.

I thought we all knew that! The Duke of Edinburgh. Mohammed "Al" Harrods said that. AND he set fire to the Cutty Sark, as announced by Paul Merton who is an intelligent sort of chap and noticed that the Duke was one of the first on the scene - like all arsonists.

    Absolutely not. It was Arizona.

Our world is just an experiment, being watched by a huge society a trillion, trillion times larger than ourselves. We are sitting in a Petri Dish in their great laboratory, being observed. Now we have proved conclusively the madness of 'society', we are about to get flushed down the sink in a sea of acid. I've heard it will happen the day after tomorrow......

Tsk, tsk, Arizona, of course. Was just checking to make sure someone was awake.

The gulf stream can and has in the past weakened considerably, and when it happens it does happen pretty quickly. Neither do we really understand why it happens. Although there are theories.

It's like the magnetic north sometimes switches poles, for no actual predictable reason.

So it could happen, but the odds of either event happening in a human lifetime... very low... certainly no evidence that it has happened at the moment. Neither event has occured in recorded history. They will probably happen at some point in the future, but I think we're likely to be dead by then.

How on Earth is an oil spill supposed to stop the Gulf Stream?

It makes the water too heavy to go up to Britain

BP oil spill has started the next ice age

Yes, certainly, but I am not talking about these shifts, I am talking about when the entire direction of the magnetic pole flips; i.e. Canada would contain the magnetic south pole.

Last time it happened was around 780,000 years ago.

I started writing a long post based on my geology & Chemistry degree (with an option in oceanography I did) and the reading I still do on the subject ......but I cannot be a**sed because you wont listen and still believe any old hokum posted on the internet.

And the same goes for the OP too.
