Real life MMD: Should I buy the girlfriend a present?

Around five years ago I wrote to all friends and family to say that I wouldn't be giving presents, and why - being 'green' is one of many reasons. I give a small present to my husband and to any relatives under 21. It's too late this year, so buy a present for the girlfriend safe in the knowledge that this awful consumer festival will be different next year.0

She has put a lot of effort and time into choosing gifts - but she is looking for recognition for it. Maybe she's trying to establish her position in the family, but trying too hard. Maybe she's insecure in her relationship. Anyway she deserves some recognition for making an effort, even if I sense you're not warming to her. So get her a gift, or even better a joint gift, try and make it something you think she would like (even if its chocs or biscuits, something she seemed to like last Christmas so you can say 'I remembered you like these'). And of course, as with all Christmas gifts, spend as little as possible to get an acceptable present. Even if you're not much of a cook, homemade shortbread is fairly easy - look for an online recipe with video instructions.0

If you can't afford it be honest. If you can't waste the money then don't. Just tell them!
I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...
I moved to Liverpool for a better life.
And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!0 -
I would suggest getting a joint present for the both of them.
But better still if your funds are limited, why not do something homemade such as baking them a Christmas cake?
I did this for relatives last year and it was VERY well received, far so than some unwanted item from the high street. What's more the cost of the ingredients was under £5 and it only took about an hour of work at home one evening :-)0 -
I find your attitude quite cynical. You use the word 'gushed' to describe her telling you she was pleased to have found you the right presents. I actually find it quite endearing that she was pleased to have put some thought into it. She obviously tried hard to please you. In your shoes I would certainly buy her a present, with the emphasis on thoughtful rather than expensive.0

Definitely get her something, even if it is only cheap, or get a joint present for her and your uncle. It's the least she deserves after making the effort to buy all the presents, as someone else said it's very easy to hand over the money to pay but it takes more effort to choose the presents and wrap them.DFW by end of June 2016...! If you are on a budget just stick to it.
If it means getting a present for them to share. Furthermore if it means buying NOTHING then so be it.
Dont feel obliged to spend money that you aint got.0 -
No, but I would make a point of thanking the uncle profusely for his generosity.0

put some thought into buying or making her something personal but cheap.
why not print a digital photo for under a quid and mount it onto a piece of thick white card (also under a quid)
then you have a present that is as unique as the photo be it a photo of her and the uncle or a nice sunset stolen from google images.
your creativity and imagination is the limit but the price is still under £2!0 -
That's what 99p stores were invented for.My Mind wanders, if found please return.0
