Isn't "Check" ambiguous? and covers "wish" too? ;)

There's always a reason for a vehicle to be pulled over, and it's more often than not because of an "offence"...How the officer deals with that is his discretion, for example he could offer words of advice, even if the offence could incur an FPN. This alone would be reason to request documents at a police station. Gone are the days of just a routine stop check...If a car's pulled over and it's established that there isn't an offence (ANPR flagged it as no insurance, but a check says otherwise), I'm not sure what the state of play regarding producers is concerned.

You obviously know more than I do.

    What experince do you have?

I have life experience, and have been pulled over a few times... ;)

    What about you? :D

You can't make someone produce for the fun of it. The only driver who may not be on record is one who has very recently got a provisional. If there not on the system they are giving duff details.
So no point in givng them a producer.

Other than to return a licence to the DVLA upon their request or for points to be added for what reason do the police physically need possession of your licence?

I wasn't suggesting a producer can be given for no reason, and stated that you're obviously pulled over for a reason, which allows the officer to request you produce your documents. Unless laws have changed now, I've had a Producer a couple of years back as I didn't have any documents on me at the roadside. I was stopped for nothing endorsable.

Regarding the DVLA, they've been riled before for saying people didn't have licenses etc, when said people have held them for 30 years! They were even on Watchdog! Unless all the people concerned were mistaken or just don't like the DVLA. So therefore, their records (or lack of) aren't necessarily accurate, are they?

DVLA are part of a wider problem, and not possibly any solution in it's current form. the DVLA now appears to be making law up as it goes along, especially by attempting to imply a legal duty to contact them especially if you have sold or scrapped a motor and they haven't sent an acknowledgement in 4 weeks. They use it as their in to "Fine" for no sorn or a tax renewal.
  • You do have a duty to tell them but you don't have a duty to prove they rec'd it. Proof of posting has ben deemed sufficient as they use this when they send things to you.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

I thought the police normally gave a vehicle defect rectification notice which meant you had to go to an MOT test centre and get something stamped to say your plates were now legal.

Clearly the OP has been somewhat foolish in using illegal plates. However, sadly there are many reports of the Police fining people with perfectly legal pressed aluminium plates from Dubmeister - the Police are too thick to understand the relevant laws and just think pressed aluminium = illegal no matter what.

Yeh. Looks like on this occasion the police officer in question had it in his head to give out a ticket.

Does seem a bit unfiar that its up to the police officer at the side of the road whether to give ticket on spot or give out warning or give out vehicle rectification thing...
